I have the infamous 460 manifold problem.. As it appears I will be going the header route. I have gone the route of fixing these and the heads long enough.. Now I am seeking advice as to which headers to get and have this exhaust issue behind me once and for all..

Other than the banks system I would like any input as to which headers to finally go with, keeping cost in mind..

Thanks all as I have enjoyed the education reading all the post on the 460 manifold problems.

Mine is a 95 Winnebago Adventurer, 34 ft with 50K on our 460 engine.

You made a funny

Sorry, can't give you much help on the headers, but have you tried a Google Search.....who knows, maybe even JC Whitney has them, BUT, if you get them from Banks, I think you'll find that they fit a bit better, though I would guess that any brand name would probably be OK.

You could look for the doug thorley headers also, I found a pair on Craigslist awhile back, never mounted for 260.00 I have not mounted them yet but here's a link to check out.

When I replace the heads I will definitely add headers. As a preventative measure, I added 6" ducts to each manifold. I never ran the motor home near full throttle, and yet they still broke. One thing I noticed when I pulled the manifold bolts, several bolts, including the front right forward were deformed, as tho breakage was eminent. I put it back together with very light torque on the new bolts.

Make sure you get stainless steel or ceramic coated headers or you will be replacing them more than you want. Get headers with at least a 3/8" flange. Regular steel headers rust to fast.

Welcome to the forum.

I too will be putting after market headers on when mine fail again. They were covered by warranty the first couple times.

My plan is to go to several shops in my area and ask the guys who do the work what they recommend.

You didn't mention if you were going to do it yourself or have it done but in any case talking to the mechanics gets you a lot of info and tips.

Thanks for the comments so far..

To answer a few comments..

I may do this myself (still deciding). The bolts on both manifolds are less than 30 days old, as are the crappy stock manifolds.. I just want to be sure I can secure the rest of the pipes to the new headers.. I do have a very reputable mechanic whom I can work with (not free though )

I have 2 weeks planned for travel in August so my goal is to have it completed by then.. Currently the manifold is not very loud, and my experience has taught me it will grow with every use.. However after reading some comments here, I WILL NOT be using it until fixed, as I do not want to damage my NEW HEADS (2 years ago)..

As it stands (so far) I think I will be going with Thorley's stainless steel (not the ceramic), this seems to be the "best" option with my current circumstances..

As far as discounted headers.. Used, never mounted, would be nice.. Still looking but ready to bite the bullet for new ones.. Heck, I already bought new original stock manifolds this year for almost the same price..

Thank you everyone so far for the tips.. GREATLY APPRECIATED

Tony
