Ok...I know...dumb question. What happens if the tanks in the camper freeze? Do they break? Can we put something in them ourselves to stop this happening? From my reading the camper isn't 'winterized'. Will this be a problem???

More thoughts, more issues....

We used to tent it in Yellowstone during the last weeks of September. I would not hesitate to stay in a trailer. It's my favorite time of year up there.

Yeah- you'll be fine. We spend the 3rd week of September in Yellowstone every year to watch the elk. Generally the weather is great during the day and cool at night. Know how to operate the furnace and you will be comfortable. We did have a cold snap one year but it only lasted a couple of days and then it was back to normal.

We often camp in 20 degree weather in our little non-winterized trailer -- no problem. And we do not run the heat, except when we shower in the evening. Otherwise, we dress very warmly and use lots of blankets.

After all, people snow-camp in TENTS, for gosh sakes. So it is no big deal to be inside a tin box when it is very cold.

I would not want to live in these conditions for weeks at a time, but it is fun for a week or so!!

Sleep under layers. Or bring sweatsuits (pants and shirt) to sleep in. You aren't crazy. You are going at the best time of year - more wildlife, less tourist.

I don't think you will have any problems with the tanks freezing unless it really gets cold and stays cold. There is a lot of thermal capacity in a large tank of water. Ask when you pick up the RV if there is any form of heat in the bays where the tanks are. Fresh water hoses will freeze at temp slightly below freezing (take my word for it).

Thanks everyone for your comments. My daughter and I wondered what elk bugling sounded like...and I can tell you it was not what we were expecting. I think we were expecting a bellowing cow sound...but what a scream. Hope one of these bulls doesn't camp outside my camper window when he decides to let one of his bellows rip! :-) LOL.

We are so looking forward to our trip now. 76 days to go...but who's counting!!!

Bring your sleeping bags so you don't have to run heat full blast. We usually heat the place up good before going to bed, then turn it down to 55 overnight to avoid it kicking on constantly and it doesn't run the batteries as much - although battery power shouldn't be an issue overnight unless you run them down watching movies.

As others said you should not have to worry about tanks freezing if it is just dipping below freezing overnight and warnming up in the day. I've lived for weeks in 20 degree weather without freezing anything up. Of course, there are precautions to take - like leaving the doors under the sinks open to allow warm air from inside to reach the pipes - or run the hot water heater for awhile - or keeping the grey tank empty as it will be the first to crack. But if your just talking about overnight lows - I wouldn't worry to much about it. I used to worry about it - but I've lived and learned (survived).

Problem with rental RVs are they are minimally equipped on the expectation that hook-ups WILL be available EVERY night.
House batteries will be small capacity with no way to get them fully-charged and could be on their last legs as far as storage capacity goes, and this means you might not have heating when you really need it.

Still worth it for the experience though.
