Hello
We are heading over to Yellowstone and have made a booking for 3 days in the Madison CG near the end of September as part of our Western RV adventure family trip.
This is our first RV experience and from my research I believe it can be quite cold there at this time of year. My concern is the cold at night when I know generators can't be used. Are we going to wake up looking and feeling like an icy-pole?
We are travelling with our two children 7/11. Can this be done? The hire company supplies a sleeping bag and pillow each but my gut is telling me this is NOT going to be enough. We have so far bought thermals to take and warm day wear.
I guess we will be buying a few extra blankets when when get to our first Walmart? (We'll buy a small heater too...but this won't be able to be used here with no electricity supplied.) Any suggestions on what sort of heater we should get for the rest of our trip (cheapish is good- does it have to be a special voltage for an RV I guess is my question?) and anything else that would make our stay not too cold?
Are we mad...or should we drive out of YS each night and get a full hook up site?
The things we do for an adventure!
Thanks for your comments, Sonia

For us fall is the best time of the year to be outside, you might see a snow storm but there is a much better chance of beautiful days and just cool nights.

Your RV should have a propane furnace that will heat your unit just fine. The coach/TT battery may be dead or near dead in the am from the fan running on the furnace, but can be recharged by the generator or tow vehicle during the day.

Make sure you have an RV that is equipped for cold weather camping. One of the main things is to have sufficient battery power to get you through a cold night with the furnace running. Simply adding a second battery will be a big help but adding two very GOOD deep cycle batteries is even better. With enough power you should stay nice and warm. September is one of my favorite times to visit Yellowstone as the crowds are much diminished over the busy summer months.

A class C RV will have a furnace. When you pick it up take notes when they do the walk thru. Even better record it. Have everyone listen multiple memories help LOL. Make sure they show you how to use the furnace, dump the waste tanks, add fresh water, and operate the slide and leveling jacks if equiped.
Rent the movie RV with Robin Williams and enjoy the trip.

Steve...My kids love the RV movie with Robin Williams. I definitely won't be using a 'T' intersection to pump out the waste tanks! ha ha. (You know which scene I'm talking about!) I think after I've spent all this time planning...that sort of work can be left to hubby! ;-) My husband had this great thought for our holiday so far...that being to video the instructions so that we could look back on it if needed in case we couldn't take it all in. It's nice to have confirmation that this is a good idea.
Thanks for everyones suggestions so far...and I'm SO glad to hear about this furnace heater. We'll be driving around each day anyway and then can have the generator on in the morning, so that should charge everything back up again.

You should be fine the latter part of September--it is actually the nicest part of the year in Yellowstone. I would take some good sleeping bags which will provide all the warmth you need for sleeping. The days will be warm enough that you should be comfortable indeed. Have fun.

We were in Yellowstone on August 25 one year and it was snowing.
Yellowstone is high so the weather can be cold in September. It can also be warm during the day. But cold nights will be normal.
Check with the Rental company about using their rig in the cold.
We met a dutchman in Alaska who's rental company told him not to put water in the camper. He was using the campground's restroom only. Not much fun.
