It's hard to believe that such an obvious design flaw got through all the design checks and into mass production. How embarrassing!

There is an article from Mac World that addresses this and it turns out to be a standard issue due to FCC regulations and one the IPhone is prone to due to the exposed antenna.

Those who have a case don't have the problem and I for one, haves cases on my IPod Touches and IPad. I don't know why one wouldn't put a case one one.

Really? For $199 - $299, I would think that if a case is REQUIRED for proper function, it would come with one included in the box!

I walked into an AT&T store yesterday to purchase an LG smart phone, but walked out 30 minutes later with the iPhone4. I purchased a case for it. So far, no signal strength issues, especially where my previous phone, a Motorola Razor, did not get full bars. This is my first Apple product....ever.

I was aware of the signal strength issue, and asked the AT&T saleserson about that. He had me hold the phone as if I were using it on a call, and said the way I was holding it would not impead signal strength. Works for me. I think some folks out there get their underwear wound up way too tight over trivial issues.

It's not required, just, ISTM, a good idea to protect it or any other similar device. Which,as I said, I always put cases on my mobile devices.

Sensational headlines is the only thing you're reading.

Did you know that NOKIA, GOOGLE , HTC all have the same issue?????

Google Droid reception problem or HTC reception problems it will provided plenty of reading.

The OP probably should have read the multi page thread already running, rather then rehashing it all over again.

Here is the best analysis of the iPhone 4 reception issue I have read.

The Real Story on iPhone 4's Antenna

The author compares various scenarios with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and HTC Nexus One.

Non issue for me. The article Pulsar linked analyzed it well and the bottom line is the antenna is better than older iPhones. Since I have always used a case the problem of holding it is moot. However, out of curiosity I picked up my iPhone 3G to see how I held it. I'm left handed and noted my habit is to hold the phone with my finger tips. My left thumb is just above the midpoint on the left side and not in the lower left corner. My four finger tips are spaced along the right side. Sometimes my little finger drops to the bottom right side as a support. So I would assume even without a case I would be OK with my holding habits.
