Just got back from dry camping at Red Fish lake in Stanley, Idaho. Beautiful! One hitch, though. Somebody accidentally brushed up against one of the stove dials and in doing so accidentally opened this valve to "high". it was leaking propane until the dual propane/CO monitor went off. My son was sleeping in the rig while the adults were outside enjoying the fire. Luckily, we heard the alarm, went inside and the stench was awful! Woke up my son and opened all windows and then realized what had happened. I don't want to have this problem again.
Anybody installed a gas valve going to the stove/oven so it won't leak even if somebody accidentally brushes up against the burner valves. If you have, do you mind sharing pictures or explaining how you did it?
Thanks in advance

The AGA standard is that you have to push in and then turn the valve in order for it to come on... all in all, its a safe standard and should not be a problem. Try it... its hard to acidentally turn on the gas.

Thanks for chiming in. I know, it does have to be pushed and twisted. Far as I can see, seems somebody's butt pushed it in and twisted probably while he pulled out the bed from the sofa. In any case, I would like to install a valve going to the stove. We don't actually use it, so might as well close it off with a valve..
anybody?

The gas line usually comes across the burner section under the lift up top cover to the front valve manifold. Your local propane distributor should be able to install a shut off valve there for a nominal charge that would be easy to access in case the stove was needed in the future.

In my rig the propane detector is connected to a solenoid on the propane tank and automatically shuts off propane when propane is detected - used to be common but think newer rigs don't come with them.

Now that's something that some government busy-body thought we needed and actually turned out to be a great idea. Mine doesn't do that but I wish it did.

Hi,
I had to install a valve on my motorhome, what happened to me is the stove was on, boiling some water, and the valve got stuck - on! So I went to the hardware store, found a valve, and installed it near the gas inlet to the RV.
By the way, to shut off the stove, I did not panic, just shut off my propane detector, and it stops flow of gas into the RV, also to the refrigerator.
That is why I had to fix it within a short time, to get the refrigerator working again. To continue the trip, I bought a plug for the gas valve that was broken, removed the bad valve, installed the plug (1/4" pipe I think) and continued on my trip.
Replaced the bad valve several weeks later.
One question - my propane leak detector is mounted down low, because propane is heavier than air, and will sink to the floor, filling the camper from the bottom up, potenitally sufficating the victims.
My CO detector is mounted about 3' above the ground, perhaps 4', so that it can detect flue gas, or gas coming from the burning stove, that would be warmer air, and thus higher off the ground.
So you have a combination CO and propane detector - is it mounted within 12" of the floor? That would seem to cause difficulty detecting the CO, but above 12" from the floor it is in the wrong location for a gas leak detector.
I installed the gas shut off under the stove burners, in a location where the gas goes into a manifold, where the oven valve is located, and the pipe tee is towards the burners in the front.
Of course do a leak check with soap bubbles after installing the valve.

lift up the cook top and look to see if you have valves. mine has one for the oven.and i think for the cook top.
on home unites there is a shut off under the cooking deck top.
you may luck out and find one already installed on your stove.
it you dont and still want a valve you need tools like a tubing cutter and a flaring tool. if the incomming propane supply tube has clearance to work it could be done by anyone experienced with gas plumbing.
consult an expert first... you dont wannna have a KOOBOOOM!!!

What about making a sheetmetal guard over the knobs so you can't bump into them or a piece of round stock might be easier and just as effective?? Craig

Thank you.
The detector is about 5-6 inches above the floor. Factory installed (KZ Escalade Sportster).
Tomorrow will open the cook top and familiarize myself with the hose anatomy. Will try to set one easily accessible valve for both cooktop and oven. A sheetmetal guard sounds too involving and then won't look stock and possibly hacked. But, thank you for the suggestion
