I've been researching this lately, too. In an ideal world, I would like one that has a crank for auxiliary power by hand as well as SAME technology. I'm having trouble finding one with both that gets decent reviews.
The FR-600 from Eton is apparently such a power hog that it tears through batteries and I'm guessing you'd have to crank full time to use it. Doesn't seem like a power hog is a practical choice for RV use since I don't always have access to power.
There is one by Rally that appears to be primarily sold at Home Depot, but the one review isn't very helpful and I can't find any others.
All the others with the crank (that I have found) do not offer SAME. I'm sure I'll ditch the crank concept before the SAME concept, but I've just started my research, so this thread is timely.

We've been happy with this one....

have one from radio shack, has AM & FM / weather alert (must alert or you have to keep it on all the time). Runs on batteries, solar to rechargable batteries and hand crank. all for under 50 bucks...

We have Oregon Scientific WR103 .. we purchased it in 2005 while in Missouri .. have relied on it several times .. we have to reprogram it every time we move .. have thought it would be nice to have one which automatically reprograms itself to the local S.A.M.E.
Oh, on edit .. we have a CB in the TV which has weather alert and weather channel ..

Check beyond the big brand names and you will find Reecom. They makes a quality desktop radio. You can add an external antenna, has an alarm output, and lots of programming features. Model R-1630. I just bought one after advice on an earlier thread this month by a poster that already had done the homework. I had recently bought an Oregon Scientific hand held and the sensitivity was so poor I immediately started looking around and then bought the Reecom. Also, NOAA has a coverage map of the United States. There are large areas of the country without any service -- in the boondocks of course. But isn't that where a lot of us spend time!
EIDT: It has a 21 inch whip antenna you can extend. Combined with its excellent sensitivity in the electronics it's hard to beat. And not expensive either.

X2.. this is what I have. Quality radio. Many county emergency service depts use it to rebroadcast weather warnings. And you can program it for what warnings you want and what ones you don't want. Also program it for your own county or surrounding counties. Great weather radio with SAME technology. Oh, those backup batteries last days.

Get one with an extendable antenna or an antenna input. I've been in places where nothing was received without the antenna fully extended.

2Sooners wrote: An alternative that we have gone to is we purchased a Radio Shack Pro-107 scanner. It has even more features for weather protection than the ones you have been discussing such as Skywarn, etc.
I use my Yesau FT-51 R or my Kenwood TS-2000 for skywarn... (NOTE FOLKS< License required to use those radios, They can TRANSMIT)
Now the reason for this reply:
Does the PRO-107 detect the codes and alert you or does it just stop at say 162.55MHZ and wait forever for the carrier to drop?
Though it is indeed possible to design a scanner with a "Sub" receiver that scans only the weather alert channels, locks on the strongest one adn watches for the proper alert signals using SAME technology.
The question is: IS this one that does that.
Or not
IF NOT..
Then back it up with a weather radio.. I got my Midland at.. Radio Shack, (of course) back when they sold radios.

Buy any model. You'll likely to be the first to know the storm that just blew through was part of a Severe Weather Warning.
Or, you could spend the money on a good book on how the weather works. But, hey, no body does that sort of thing any more. Except, maybe pilots. And, I wonder about that too.

We also have and like the Oregon Scientific radio.
We had 5-6 that we got from Radio shack and they quit working faster than we could return them. Don't buy their brand.
