What's the big hurry anyway. Spending $50,000.00 more for motor home that can go up a 6% grade hill faster, you need to quit watching the speed channel.

Last August I towed my Jeep Liberty with my Workhorse 8.1L gaser up and down some 6%-9% grades in the Massachusetts Berkshire mountains. My gaser has an Allison 6-speed and although it wasn't a speed demon, I really didn't want to go much faster than 50 mph anyway. I could easily carry 40-50 mph with both od's off; the steeper hills required 2nd gear. The fact is most roads with really steep grades are country back-roads where I would never want to be rolling very fast at the best of times.

Going down was never a problem with the Allison Grade Brake; it took just the odd pump of the pedal to maintain safe down hill speeds.

I run a Gear Vendor and don't really have much problem pulling the grades. But I'm more concerned about frying the headers that maximum speed over the top, too. Guess it helps to not be in a hurry.

OK, I'm ignorant...what's a gear vendor?

I guess it come down to "How big of a hurry?" I just line up in the slow lane and let the old rig do her thing. Semis and MHs all creep up the mountain at about 40-45 MPH.
Consider that motorhomes are only underpowered while under way, which of course isn't all that often. Once you get used to it, que sera.
Additional thought: never try to go down a mountain faster than you went up it.

Not overly concerned about depreciation with this rig...
