So you are moving 25000 pounds up a mountain and slow down to 25mph. Fail to see where this is an eye opening experience. I would have been more shocked if you would not slow down, no matter if it is a gasser or DP.

Sit back relax and don't worry about the time you make unless you run the MH in a race of some sort.

I run a Gear Vendor and don't really have much problem pulling the grades. But I'm more concerned about frying the headers that maximum speed over the top, too. Guess it helps to not be in a hurry.

My '99 Itasca with V10, pulling a Saturn, went up I-70 from Denver and through the tunnel with no problems, slowest was 40 mph for a very short distance. I have no complaints, have pulled many other steep grades and was happy with it's performance.

Although heavier my ME diesel ISL does no better going up than my 8.1 Gasser did with toad. And have smoked the brakes on both going down! However have never had to go slower than 40 going up(unless curves dictated less) with either one from the Devils Backbone in Mexico to the West coast to the East coast to Alaska and over 200 mountain passes(clicking them off in "Mountain Directory East & West").
Just did the Teton pass(Wyoming) today 10% for over 5 miles.

I love to to slow and see the sights (when there is something to see). However, going 25 miles per hour up the interstate with the engine screaming at 4,500 RPM doesn't qualify as taking it easy in my book.

I guess I never fully appreciated how much performance I had with my old combination compared to heavier motorhomes.

I take my gas A over the Grapevine all the time, and Baker grade, Grants Pass, and through the Eisenhower tunnel. You sort of define your own problem, 36ft A fully loaded towing over 4K lb with the Jeep. My previous MH, a PaceArrow with Ford V10 handled these grades at 50mph but I only towed a Mercury Tracer, under 2Klb. My current Workhorse handles the 3K lb Saturn at 50 to 55mph, dropping to 45mph at the steepest grades. It is true, gas has significantly less pulling power than diesel, but if you travel within the specs, and don't mind not having a real tile floor and triple insulation, etc, then gas delivers quality for the money.
Just my opinion.
Happy Trails.

My coach is HEAVY and our TV is also, we don't break any speed records with ours but I don't care, first thing I was told when moving to a class A is slow down and enjoy the ride.

Amen it took me a long time to figure out I am on vacation!!! Slow down relax you'll get there. I am not retired but I do get 5 weeks vacation a year which helps.

The other one that helps no matter what happens I have food, a bathroom and a bed where ever I am!

Personally, I credit the 6 speed as the best part of the hill climbing ability of my diesel with the turbo's ability to hold HP the second.

My old Pace Arrow, if slowed enough to downshift could never regain that gear because the spacing was too far between gears. I would just hold the peak HP rpm in the new gear. Often that meant 28 mph in first (at 3600ish I think) on steep grades. The diesel slows as well as it is heavier, but only to 40-45 on simular grades.

While the cockpit is quieter on the diesel, both rigs are working hard up a hill. Don't let the fact that it's out of earshot or turning lower RPM lull you into thinking otherwise. I watch them like a hawk on these climbs.

I was watching it very carefully and even turned off the AC (something I haven't felt the need to do since the early 80's). The interesting thing is that the water temp and transmission temp gauges never budged a millimeter. I'm starting to wonder if they even work!
