Hi,
Has anyone stayed at Hillsborough State Park in the Feb? What are the camp sites like? Do you have a favorite campsite that is okay for a 35 ft. travel trailer? I'm sure this is a home for lots of gators. Will they be out and about in Feb? We like state parks but have never camped at one in Florida. Thanks for you help.

Hillsborough River State Park is an excellent place to stay. We were there in late December and enjoyed it even though it was cold. Did not see any gators there, but the park has lots of wildlife and is well kept.
Being that we are from South Florida the park reminded me of "up north"

Hillsborough River SP is one of my favorite Florida SP's! There are plenty of trails, lots of nature, a humongous swimming pool and of course the CG.
On Friday and Saturday night they bring a tram around and give you a tour of the park. They give the history of the park and discuss the wildlife. I think on Sunday's they also give a tour across the road at an old fort.
The CG only has electric and water. There is a bathouse on each loop. Several of the sites are very large and you shouldn't have any trouble getting in. As I recall there are a couple of pull-throughs.
My only problem with HRSP is when it rains, it floods in the CG. The water does eventually soak in, but it can take a while. I'm talking several inches. Some of the sites are so old they have a bowl effect so they obviously hold more water.
I have talked with the park manager on the problem and she is working on some solutions. However, like everything else, it comes with time and money.
All that said, February, you shouldn't have to much problem with flooding. Not really our rainy season. You may see a gator or two. It will depend on how cold it is. I have never stayed in HRSP in February. I will tell you it should be a lot more comfortable and the mosquitoes wont be out yet.
HRSP is just up the road from Tampa which is a fun city. We especially like the old Ybor City area.
Hope this helps.
And in the end it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years.
Working towards full-timing!

Not usually much if any rain in February.
Park has lots to do.
The pool will be closed in February.
But lots of other things to do.
They used to have an all you can eat fish fry there in Friday nights -
not sure if they still do that.

We may see you there. We go alot.
The gators usually stay down in the river -- and you can spot them from the large bridge within the campground. Great hiking trails.
We like the sites in the 60's. ReserveAmerica has decent descriptions of the site length.
Have fun! It may get chilly in Feb.

When we lived in Tampa we stayed there a lot and mostly November through April, which is the best time.
You won't have to worry about gators in the campground. You may see some down by the river, but probably not unless you kayak.
There are lots of trails to hike and bike on, and lots of wildlife.
You can check my blog for photos and some of our favorite campsites.

We've been to Hillsborough several times but, oddly, have never seen a gator there. There probably won't be many gators moving in February anyway.
It can get a bit chilly; last February we had (just north of Tampa) about seven nights of lows in the upper 20s. As mentioned, Hillsborough can be a mudhole but winter's the dry season.
Be sure to take the tram tour and the fort tour.
