Have you cashed the $500 deposit check? If not, I certainly would NOT accept a cashiers check from them. If they can get a cashiers check they can get cash. I would ONLY accept cash.

If they will not agree to that then I would call the deal off, return or tear up the $500 check (which may be phony anyway) and then call the other interested parties and tell them the trailer is still available. This deal sounds somewhat fishy to me and I would proceed with extreme caution if I were you.

1st - A deals a deal.
2nd - Sounds like you have a good buyer. However, here is what I have done in the past with people I don't know. If they want to pay with a check/cashiers check/whatever, that is fine. What I did was made plans to meet them at their bank, not mine, and then cash the check(s) on the spot. It was simple. Then, and only then did they get the the merchandise.

Now, here's a cash story. Sold a quad for $3950.00. Guy brought cash, and counted it out in front of me... Only he got a little quiet at the end. I happened to notice an extra $100 bill in his wallett when he was checking for the $50. Well, I of course re-counted the money, in front of him and low and behold, it was $100 short... Hmmm, we recounted together, yup $100 short... He then gets out his wallet and pulls out that extra fin. Remember, always count de money!

For sure it is a binding deal.Years ago my DW bought a Honda car at a garage sale, she paid cash for it , got a receipt etc and said she would be back that afternoon to pick it up. We went back to pick up the car and the seller had sold it for more money. Gave us the money back and said "sorry". Long story short I took the Lady to Court, got the car after 5 weeks. I payed the new "owner" what the DW agreed to pay at the garage sale and the garage Lady had to pay the people who bought the car the difference. Plus I got all Court cost etc. You and the potential buyer have a legal agreement until 12 PM Monday

Since you asked for cash, you should stick with that. If they can get a cashier's check for the amount, they can get the cash. Since you took a check for the deposit, you don't even know if it's good for a couple weeks. They could be for real or it could be a scam

I ran into that, guy wanted to pay with a personal check. Unfortunately for him, I called the bank right then and there in front of him, and the check was no good (actually the checking account had been closed for a couple years)

When I told hem the bank wouldn't cover the check, he said he would run to the ATM. Never saw him again.

I had 3 other buyers lined up already after Mr Bad Check, and they knew where they were in line. I politely told them how many people were ahead of them and if they opted not to buy then I would call the next on the list. The 3rd fellow on the list ended up buying my old TC, as the other 2 passed (one had no clue what owning a truck camper meant, other than he couldn't put it in his Avalanche (I never considered an Avalanche a truck, more an SUV but that's a different thread)

Best bet, call the bank Monday morning, see if the check is good. If not he may bail on you, and if he does, then you can call the next person in line to look at buying it. But stress the cash thing or certified bank check from a local bank. I've had several people look at me funny when I tell them to go to XYZ Bank up the road and get a certified check. But those that have had the money in hand. Those that don't usually never come back for the stuff your selling.

You can call the bank the check is drawn on and verify funds to just see if the money is there right now. If it is then it should be good deal, if not then maybe they are as honorable. Either way you took the deposit and made a deal. Just let the others look at the trailer and if they like it take their names and numbers just in case. Oh and I had a friend who sold a truck and got a cashiers check for it, and it was bogus. Luckly he tried to call the bank in question before he allowed a shipper to load his truck for shipping.
