What kind of a set-up would you need to be able to record OTA HD programs without having satellite service?

Thanks for the help.

If you are talking recording programs from your antenna then most computers will work. Microsoft Media Center and the similar Mac software will do it, along with many others. I think my last three computers were capable of doing it, I am just to lazy.

I have been trying to figure out how to get enough bandwidth while on the road to download netflix instant. So far no good solution.

A regular ole TIVO will do the job nicely and is available at most big box electronic stores. There is a monthly subscription rate or a lifetime subscription. As I recall, the monthly rate is less than $10 and allows the unit to keep a program guide along with season passes, etc.

of course, but if the TV is not HD then the standard def VCR is irrelevent. a DVD recorder will do the trick but the catch is that without a tuner all he would be able to record is whatever the TV is currently tuned to.

we solved the problem by purchasing a panasonic VCR/DVD recorder combination unit with it's own digital tuner. cost ranges between $250-$300. since the unit has it's own tuner and is (cable ready for cable channels 2-99) we can record OTA and cable programs independent of the TV. we record to DVD virtually all of the time using DVD RW discs and use the VCR to watch pre-recorded tapes.

Why would anyone pay TIVO $10 a month to record shows on a piece of hardware you had to buy first? What am I missing ?

If by "trick" you mean record HD, then, no, your DVD won't record HD.

tom, you're correct. 480p is the best i can get from my panasonic combo VCR/DVD recorder. but it still looks very good.

Frys is now selling a HD DVR with ATSC tuner made by Channel Master that requires no monthly subscription.
