We just returned from a week long stay on the Eastern Shore of Va. We stayed at Cherrystone Campground. After reading the negative reviews on it I have got to say that I was pleasantly surprised. We stayed in the pull thru sites which were extremly clean, level and well manicured, plus a great view of the bay with stunning sunsets. The staff went out of their way to make sure we were happy, plenty for the kids to do, fishing, crabbing, swimming, daily park activities. I willo definetly be going again. It just goes to show you that you can't always pay attention to reviews.

I believe that a lot of the horror stories that appeared had to do with some bad experiences that people had right after a particularly bad noreaster that hit the area. My understanding is that the storm pushed a huge amount of water into the bay and ended up doing some major flooding to the campground. I'm not making excuses for them. From what I read, they did a poor job in handling the situation. However, I am glad to hear that you had a good experience with them. I plan to be down there next June on my way to OBX. My kids just love catching crabs off of the piers and the sunsets can't be beat.

Cherrystone has been both praised and bashed for years. I think most, but not all of the complaints are because of poor drainage, mud and the likes. They get some pretty bad thunder storms down there once in a while. Just have to realize that may happen while there and make the best of it. Personally I like the place and have been going there for years. Another reason I go is Stingrays Restaurant. Great food. Never had a bad meal there yet.

Maybe they've been re-built since then, but when we were at Cherrystone in December '09 the piers were either completely wrecked by the storm or not safe to use.
BTW, maybe of interest to snowbirds migrating via the Eastern Shore, Cherrystone is open year-round and makes a real good place to stay. We holed-up there an extra night because of high winds for the CBBT crossing.

We were there in 88w/ popup.
Good time for most of week-over Jul 4th.

On the way home we headed S over the bridge tnnel. Our son, about 8 at the time, had prepared a bottle to 'throw in'. About 1/3 way across he remembered and put it in. When we got home 10 days later he had a response. The bottle had went into (back towards Cherryton) and was found about 2 days after throwing it in. He advised the finder of when/where etc.

Thanks Tom,
I will definitely check with them regarding their piers prior to heading down.

The piers were fairly new. We took an awful lot of photos, especially of the sunsets. As soon as my wife gets caught up she will be updating our blog with our stories and pics.

I think the new owners were caught off guard with dealing with the tidal flooding situation, which was pretty extreme. I dont know how many dry sites they had during that mess to re locate people. We enjoyed the place. Check out our pics for a good photo layout of the place. As you can see, they are not much above sea level. Not much can be done about run off in heavy rains.

Don't like the view?? Then change it and Go CampingOur pics
