I was on my way back from a 3 1/2 week RV roadtrip with my daughter when I decided to spend the night in Seligman, AZ. Seligman is a small town--small enough that it doesn't even need a stoplight. Pulled in a lot next to a mini mart, and bunked down. I wake up at 1am to find a police officer sitting in his car next to me with the lights on, but nothing else going on other than a semi parked 1/4 block down the street. Went back to sleep after 10 mins, and woke up to the sounds of a helicopter making a fly over. Turns out the semi across the street had been rearended at high speed by a P/U truck. The helicopter was a a medivac helicopter that landed 50 feet from my front bumper. Incredible rotor wash-so bad my class c rocked back and forth with lots of sand/debris flying that hit my RV. For some reason, my fridge turned off, then had to reset it several times to get it to work on propane again.
Anyone else had any boondocking events that surprised you?

Many years ago as a kid my family took our popup to Tennessee. Late one night we stopped just off the highway (no interstates back then), set up and went to sleep. Just before dawn we were awoken by a bright light and an extremely loud train whistle. As we huddled around scared sh**less and the popup rocked by the buffetting winds we realized we had parked about 10' from the train tracks!

About a year ago we arrived at at Florida State Park where we had reservations to find the gate locked with a regular pad lock (I thought). It was late. So, I released the 69 VW bug (toad) and backed the motorhome underneath the overhanging branches of a beautiful large oak tree.
We were now in a very nice level spot just off the entrance. Soon after going to bed, we heard the loud horn of the train and felt the vibrations shaking our coach. I comely said "reckon we should move off the tracks?". I knew the tracks were a few feet away from us between us and the park. But, guess what. Jan didn't know that. She recently said that she really thought we were about to die.
The next morning after a peaceful night with the gate being open, we ventured on in and settled into our site. Later I realized the gate lock was a combination lock with the number selections on wheels located on the bottom of the lock. We walk among ya'll.

Many years ago we had stopped & made camp in WY at Guernsey State Park off of I-25 towards Ft. Laramie; provides seven campgrounds. Five are around the lake; located off Interstate 25, Exit 92 to U.S. Highway 26 and then State Route 270. We were near the canyon area of the lake on a ridge above the lake. Close to Ft. Laramie and Oregon Trail sites. **** Oregon Trail Wyoming ** Trail Ruts WY & Ruts Site & nearby Register Cliff
We woke up to a very strange sound which reminded us of 100s of sci-fi movies of spaceships and UFOs. I even asked my wife, "Did you hear something?" Very erie to wake up to. Later after breakfast we saw a sign in the park about a US Army Reserve Artillery Range being in the area. When canoeing on the flooded canyon lake later in the morning, we heard more shots and could tell it was firing sounds better than on the top of the ridge.
Next night, we were awoke late in the night by local teens having a "party". But didn't last long.

I think the reason why I didn't hear the crash is that I was sleeping above the cab with the fantastic fan on, which is somewhat noisy. Another thing we realized once we bunked down was that the empty lot backed up to the train tracks and there was a lot of train noise. The chopper had a bright spot light, and I know from working as an RN/paramedic that my headlights may have been distracting, and the pilot may have thought I was getting ready to drive off. I did feel kinda bad that there was a critically injured person 1/4 block down the road and I slept through it!

We were camped at Haines, Alaska at the Chilkoot State Park. Ranger said to be careful as they had had recent grizzly problems with the bear tearing up some tents and campsites. Shortly after lunch the 37,000 lb. coach started quivering and shaking and the first thing I thought of was a bear tearing up something trying to get in. I ran out banging pots and a hatchet, and yelling to chase him away, and found nothing. The next day we found it was a 5.2 earthquake! Good thing there was a fair amount of room between camp sites. Duhhhh!!!

A few years back my wife and I were tent camping at a SP in Michigan's UP. We asked about bears when we arrived, and were told to keep all good and food-prep stuff in the car because they had problems now and then, but hadn't had any that year. The night we arrived a bear starting coming around. We were amazed at how many people seemed to think that screen rooms, soft Toneau covers on the over the beds of pickup trucks, etc... could stop a bear from getting their food.
That same trip, my wife and I woke up to use the bathroom and started to walk there. About halfway, we heard the bear in a campsite right next to us... Spent quite a while in the bathroom waiting before heading back.
