Popcorn take a lot of heat to pop properly. Most people us micro and therefore it is hard to get fresh corn. The brands I like the most are Jolly Time and Snappy. The later is very hard to find. It is a small company from Breda Iowa. I would doubt many people on this forum have ever heard of Breda. Most RV's are bigger than the town. I always buy white corn. Pops a little smaller but is tender and to my taste has more flavor. Just as a side note; I grew up in the popcorn capital of the world Schaller Iowa. I still eat corn two or three times a week. If you are diabetic it is almost a free snack.

Always very consistently excellent results if you remember to keep the pan moving and use a low flame!
Hi Everyone,
I'm a wannabe RV-er -- love reading all of your posts!
beacher -- where do you get Jiffy Pop for such low prices?? I pay more than $2 a pan at the supermarket -- it was on sale 3/$5 yesterday and that's the cheapest in years. Any tips appreciated!

Our local Target store frequently puts them in their "dollar" bins at the entrance to the store, at 4 for $1.00. That's when we stock up. They also carry them at Big Lots for $1.00/each.
Maybe it's because of the previously mentioned trans-fat that nobody ever buys them at full retail price, so they have to clear them out every now and then? Hmmmmm?

When I was younger my parents use to make popcorn at home in a popper that used the oil. After it got don popping, my dad would take a brown paper sack and put the pop corn in it. sprinkle it with salt and the close it up and shake it. Then he would roll down the edges to the popcorn. That was the best popcorn in the world...lol Now I use microwave popcorn. Not just any though. I have a specific brand and type. I wouldn't mind trying it the old fashioned way. We've done the jiffy pop thing before, but it really wasn't my favorite.

Thanks for the info; I'll have to check Target. I do try to avoid Jiffy Pop and use my Whirly Pop instead due to trans fat but sometimes it's hard to resist.
The only micro popcorn i can stand is Smart Balance; the butter one is the best but even the one in the green bags is pretty good compared to other brands. Whirly Pop actually takes less time, though, and is way better.

I use a pan with a heavy bottom and put the oil and popcorn in it while the pan is still cold.
Shake the pan to coat all the kernels with the oil and heat over medium heat. Once the oil starts to sizzle, start shaking and don’t stop till the popping done. Use a lid, but leave the lid open enough to let the steam out without letting the popcorn out.

I have a Stir Crazy Popper and it does a great job. The trick to popping corn is get popper and oil hot before adding kernels. How you know is place 2-3 kernels in oil, when they pop add the rest.
I bought a hot air when they first came out, popped two batches and gave it away!! Salt won't stick and corn was tough!
Orval corn seems to pop the best and largest.
