I spent two and a half months doing the Gulf coast last winter. Started in Texas and went all the way around to Cedar Keys in FL. I am glad I got to see it when I did. It is/was beautiful. I commend you for your support of the area. Doubt I will ever make it back.

Now they will have an excuse to raise the price of sea food along with the gas.

Excuse? Nearly 40% of the Gulf is closed to fishing,as I type. Shut off 40% of the supply of anything at all, and the price will rise-particularly if the gap is filled with seafood from South America and Asia. If you can't afford it,don't buy it. Spend it on mountain oysters instead

Look for it to get much worse. The amounts of oil involved have been consistently misstated by BP (translation: they are liars). BP is proving that they have no clue about how to stop this mess they created by cutting corners and ignoring safety procedures. If the blowout runs until August--which looks increasingly likely--when the relief well will supposedly be completed, the entire Gulf will be affected for decades to come. It appears certain that the oil will be spread by the ocean currents to the eastern seaboard, and possibly even to the beaches of Europe. Ironically, the amount of oil that can be brought to market from these ultra-deep water wells is so small that it will not affect the price at the pump or our level of imports, since the market for oil is worldwide. The only beneficiaries will be the executives and shareholders of BP.

I am supposed to leave next week for the Gulf Shores but we are debating going. Not because of the oil itself but due to breather problems and they are saying the fumes from the oil could cause problems for someone with breathing problems. I don't know where we will end up.

Anyone with breathing problems should stay away from the spill area. Those fumes are not just smelly, they contain volatile organic compounds such as benzene and others that are known to be harmful at low exposure levels even in healthy individuals. People with existing issues like asthma or COPD (emphysema) could become seriously ill from breathing this stuff.

I agree and think the area needs people to keep coming back. You might not get in the water and it might not be as pretty, but remember the land stuff that you do while there and how the economy in those areas will be affected.

I burn at the beach anyway. If I could I would go to support the local economy, they need tourist now more than ever. It is what it is people, i'm sure there are lots of things to do in ALL costal areas effected by the oil spill, get on the local web-sites and do somethings you normally wouldn't do...museums, city parks, check out shopping, historial sites, etc. The beaches will be back, just give 'em time.

I have a condo in Gulf Shores that was valued at at around $750k, pre-Ivan. My wife has respiratory problems so I don't know what the future holds for us. Right now I would probably have trouble getting 1/3 of of the past value. I doubt BP is planning to write me a check.
