06 being the last year before emissions restrictions were tightened? I've heard about a number of problems resulting from the DPF, not to mention larger engines for 07 bringing new problems of their own...
I can afford an 06-07, so is there any reason I should be looking at the 07's or should I just play it safe with an 06?
Also, I hear a lot about Fords 6.0L reliability, but surely most of the problems must have been worked out by 2006? I'm looking to own this truck for a long time so reliability is paramount.
I'm a Dodge guy now but am leaning towards a GM, due to the 6 speed Allison. The LBZ doesn't seem to have the injector problems that the earlier models had either...
Thanks

With the 6.0L Powerstroke it seems a LARGE percentage of the problems came in the 2003 and 2004 model years. Come 2005 they lessened, and 2006 to 2007 saw the same....although there are still "problem children" in those years.
IF..IF...IF I were going to buy a Ford with the 6.0L PSD it would definitely be 2006 or newer.
That's just playing the percentages to me.

I own an '06 F250 with the 6.0 and have no problems. Most problems are from the early years and people chipping and programing them. The problem were streched head bolts and blown head gasgets. If you are looking at a 6.0 you might want to do some research into the truck about chips and programs

For a Duramax, there were 2 engines produced in the 06 models (LLY & LBZ), and 2 for the 07's (LBZ - Classic & LMM - NBS). The LMM's had the DPF's. Both engines (LBZ/LLY) are good and will get the job done.

Each brand had '06 and early '07's (for Ford, all '07's) that did not have the DPF and are pretty good trucks, arguably the best years for trucks for the last 5 years or so.
GM -- had LLY engine for first part of '06, LBZ for last part of '06 and in '07 "Classic" models. Niether have DPF's. You can tell it's a "classic" by the old body style. You have to look at the shipping codes in the glove box or the 8th letter of the VIN to see if an '06 is an LBZ or LLY. '06-07 LBZ = 360 hp, 650 torque; '06 LLY = 310 hp, ~ 605 torque. No prevalent injector issues w/ either, no overheating, etc. Both have the 6 spd Allison, which is an amazing transmission, which was not available before '06.
Ford -- All '07 diesels have 6.0L Powerstroke, which doesn't have a DPF. All engines built after 1/1/06 are called the "commonized" Powerstroke, and are probably your best bet for reliability. So some '06's will have it, some wont. 325 hp, 570 torque. From a reliability perspective, I personally would purchase a commonized 6.0l, install a coolant filter and gauges to monitor a few key parameters, and not worry too much about it. You'll find many people who would not. IMO, the rest of the truck is great. 5 spd. Torqshift transmission is also very good, has virtually all the features of the 5 spd Allison found in '05 and older GM's.
Dodge -- 5.9 l Cummins available in '06 and first half of '07, w/o a DPF. You hae to look under the hood to see which the '07 has, as the body style for the '07 6.7 is unchanged. 5.9 l has 325 hp, 610 torque for these years, as I recall. Really no changes to the engine from '05, from what I recall. Legendary engine. Opinions about there rest of the truck will vary - personally, I wasn't crazy about it. IMO, the 4 spd auto paired w/ the 5.9 L engine is the least advanced of the three trannys available from these years.
FWIW, I absolutely love my 2500HD LBZ. I researched and drove all three brands extensively in the years you're talking about here, and liked the LBZ/Ally powertrain the best, hands down (not that the others aren't good, but I found this easily the smoothest and most powerful). But in reality, they are all great trucks, and I'd feel lucky to be able to own any of them.
Good luck!

I'd recommend an 06 or early 07 5.9L powered Dodge, or an 06 or early 07 Duramax. Chocolate vs. vanilla IMO, each has their plusses and minuses, both are good, it's just which one you like better.
I'd not take the gamble on the 6.0L powered Ford no matter the year, especially if "reliability is paramount" as you say.

IMO you are right, 06 was a great year. Although I wouldn't suggest a PSD, it seems 06 was the best year for the 6.0. Just when all 3 had good trucks, the EPA stepped in
