A few weeks ago,I returned to Toldeo where I store my motor home and needed to dump, but not to fuel. I stopped at the Flying J down by the toll road and went in to ask how much just to dump. The told me to go ahead -- no charge. I am still good with Flying J even if they will be charging!

Like someone else said, not surprised, even though you are buying fuel - you have to buy it anyway!!! I would reckon they aren't bringing the bucks thru the door that they once did...lot of Independent Drivers have dropped out. I believe it is a sign of the times - no more freebies. Safe travels.

Monday we stopped in the "whatever truck stop",off of I-95 in Emporia, VA. After we fueled up, on our way out, my wife saw a sign that said, something like "$10.00 to dump, unless you buy"............. but she was unable to read the rest of it. Considering what we pay for other NONnecessities, I don't think it's such a bad deal. Robbie

I believe the one in Franklin, KY. has been changed over already. It had a place to either swipe your credit card or insert a token which I assume you would get inside if you have to pay for your fuel in there. I thought it said the price was $5.00 if not mistaken.

Yes, it's certainly a sign of the times. IMHO, we haven't seen the last of charging for what once was "free".

The whole point in the dump stations is to lure RVers in to buy fuel. If one has to pay to dump, then I'll buy fuel somewhere else. One spends 300 bucks on fuel, they should not have to pay anything to dump.

On the other hand to just dump and not spend money, sure, its OK to charge then, but not if you buy a significant amount of fuel.

I agree. If you're buying a significant amount of fuel, then there should be no charge to use the dump station. If not buying fuel, then a nominal fee to dump is acceptable. After all, it does cost money to maintain the dump station.

Having said that, we should all be careful as to not get into to a Flying J flaming session until more details are learned. I just stopped off at The (one and only) Flying J in our area and there was no mention of a fee to use the dump station. I've also checked their website, and no mention of it there either. This may be unique to only certain locations.

I myself use Flying J's almost exclusively when traveling in the MH. I like the easy-in/easy-out of the RV lanes. (Well OK, at most locations anyway as some are not so easy-in/easy-out.)

I recall not having to put any coins into the machine to pump air into the tires, for example. That was quite a while ago, though...

That always struck me as funny too. Paying for "air". But, you're correct - sign of the times. Everything "costs" to operate and maintain. The days of the courtesy perks offered at various establishments has faded almost into oblivion.

With the cost of everything now, do you really blame them? I don't. I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that many of those fees help to pay for lawyers and litigation these days. Think about it, with regard to the subject here...Someone's tire explodes when filling at your station causing injury = Lawsuit! Someone trips and falls over an un-wound air hose left by some inconsiderate user = Lawsuit! You know what I mean...

It's always good to go to the source when these questions come up. I emailed FlyingJ this morning about this and here is FlyingJ's response...

Yes, we are going to begin charging a fee for disposing of your grey and
black waste. This is not a decision that we have taken lightly. As you have
seen as you have used some of our locations around the country, we have had
to close many waste stations, as have many other business and state
facilities. This fee is a response to being able to continue to offer this
service to our valued customers. As a loyal fueling customer we do offer a
$5 coupon on your Flying J RV Real Value card.

We understand that you have many fueling options. We hope that the services
and facilities we provide will help retain your loyal business.

I dont mind paying to dump and I use Flying j every chance I get. I stopped in Brunswick Ga and gas across the street was 2.79 a gallon and Flying J was 2.85 so since I needed to dump I went there and paid extra for the privilege of using the dump station. After getting my gas I pulled up to dump and saw the pay inside sign. I was dissapointed mostly because they gave no advance warning. I would have went to the 2.79 station across the street.
