Yeah guys, I'm that guy. You got me.

Just because I'm out riding until dusk or surfing at sunset and happen to cook/eat dinner closer to 8 or 9 doesn't imply I'm an inconsiderate idiot.
I'm sorry, but we're not people that sit on our lazy butts on a chair all day, reading/boozing while my foo foo rat dog is barking at anything and everything, and eat dinner like clockwork at 6 pm! Get over yourselves.

I have a french press for coffee so I don't HAVE to use the maker, I own a 400W inverter, but my new trailer's TV requires close to 600W so that's not working now. We like to cook, have a few lights on and listen to music (within respectable volume levels) at night and sometimes I get pretty low on my 2 - 12V batteries.
I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here people, I've had a few people recently tell me how great/quiet these Honda Gen's are. I have never actually heard one in person. So I'm doing my research and asking if anyone has any experience or success with this idea.
I suppose I'll have to go the add'l battery and larger inverter route...

Thanks to some of you for the idea's and insight so far...

IMO why not obey the rules. It is folks in RV's running generators when they should not that get RV's BANNED from tent areas.

Ok, off my soapbox now.

This is exactly the kind of post I'm looking for. Thank you Jeff.
Doheny is one of our favorite SB's to camp at.
My wishful thinking for this Honda 2000 sounds like it was just that....wishful thinking. Hoped it was quiet enough to not be heard most of the time, but sounds like it isn't.

I'm with everyone in not acting a fool and ruining it for us RV'ers. I personally don't know how anyone sleeps past 7 a.m. in any of these Socal SB's because the kiddo's are out in full force by then.
And we're quiet and at the fire by 9-10 p.m., it's just a few hours of gen time before and after the standard 10-8 reg's I long for on certain trips...wish it was 8 am - 10pm instead, but ya can't have it all

Why would Doheny have it's quite hours as 10PM-6AM, but generator quite hours from 8PM-10AM? The Honda/Yamaha generators have a noise output lower than normal talking levels.

You could put up your solar panels, wind generators, float out your portable wave generator and auger into the heart of the earth for your geothermal power... Oh, I forgot, alternative energy truly IS a fairy tale!

(park close to the edge of the park and run a very long extension cord out in the weeds to your Honda?)

I've thought about making a box with sound dampening material in it with a small fan to keep it cool just to see how quiet I can get my generator.

Not everyone uses a Honda or Yamaha

Quiet Hours mean no amplified sound i.e. Radios and in some parks Televisions.

The Honda gens are fairly low volume near idle. However they do ramp up and make significant noise when you start pulling any real power.

600w for a tv? Dang I don't think my 50" LCD projection at home takes that much power. Is the 400w inverter wired direct on the battery? That oem 12v connector by the tv is only good for maybe 100w. Just a random thought, I suppose you already knew that.

For lighting consider LEDs that use one tenth the power.

It is hard to hear the waves with the drone of even the quietest of generators running. Party on, stay safe.

Good point!

I really don't have to worry about my gen running where I camp, but I will be installing multiple 6Vs to make it a non issue.

You bag on people who like to sit outside and read but then complain that you can't run a generator to power your 600watt home theater system. Wow! Perhaps a little compromise could be in your future???

To address your question: The Honda and Yamaha inverter gens are definitely quiet enough to tuck under your vehicle and run for a couple hours to charge up your batteries. Especially if done during the typically noisy hours of late afternoon/early evening at almost every SB CG I've ever been to.

We use either a 13" CRT or 19" LCD for camping that will run all night on the house batteries if we were so inclined. When we're out in the dez or up in the mountains with no neighbors the gen(s) run pretty much the whole time we're camping. But, on those rare occasions we're in a non-hookup CG we modify our camping-style accordingly.
