Hey all,

Summer's here which means we'll be doing more beach camping, and the majority of the state beaches we'll visit have the 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. generator hours.

We have the Onan 5500 gen and 2 - 12V batteries.
I know this isn't spot on for the Toy Hauler group, but I feel we are some of the more clever RV owners around and am curious what you all prefer.
I know I could look into 4 - 6V batteries and install a solar panel to charge those. Then get an inverter large enough to power the TV/Sat., coffee maker and allow us to use our laptops.

My newest obsession is looking into buying a Honda 2000 portable generator and leave everything else on the trailer as is. No solar/inverter/6 volt.
It would be very rare we'd need to run any AC off of it, more so just to keep the house batteries charged, and allow us to use everything else whenever we please, without having to deal with tent campers complaining to the camp host at 8:05 p.m. to come and tell me my gen needs to get turned off as I'm in the final stages of a massive dinner prep.

Are any of you guys/gals running these super quiet Honda's with success (especially in CA) during quiet hours?
Where do you keep them when they are running?
I'd think behind the tires of the trailer on the patio side of your campsite would be furthest away from the neighbors on most sites...
75% of my interest in buying one is to be able to use the coffee maker/toaster at 7 a.m. or watch a movie at 9 p.m., so I want to hear of if people are having success with this setup or if it ain't gonna fly with the CG Fuzz...

Thanks!

Solar + 4 12v + inverter
Run the genie from 6pm to 8pm then inverter
Don't know about coffee maker (don't use one) but everything else works good

- last time out there were many gen sets working well past 8pm

It would not fly with me at 7a or 9p

You only need 300w to run the tv/dvd/satellite.

Coffee can be made on the stove.

For microwave and electric coffee (if you must) then get the four golf batteries and a sine wave inverter. You may also need a better converter for fast charging.

Hondas are quieter but are far from silent. Get the Honda for efficiency but plan on turning it off during quiet hours.

for the morning coffee... go out side and "warm up the diesel truck"... Worked with my old 7.3l PSD. The new 6.4l is too quiet for that move however.

2 6v are better than 2 12v if you don't want to spend to $$$ for 4 6v.

yes inverter.

Upgrading the battery supply would be my first step. I just added a second set of 6Vs this season and have been very pleased.

As mentioned, make sure your converter is working as hard as possible so you can get all available charge out of your gen hours. Then leave the gen running the WHOLE allotted time.

Strategic inverters: I would use more than one inverter for specific purposes. No sense having a HUGE inverter to power the whole trailer when you only need to run one TV.

Invite the tenters to your party and lube them up so fully that they sleep through your gen noise.

Consider adding outdoor speakers to mask the sound?

We have Hondas, but we make coffee on the stove and watch TV on the computer.

Even a Honda won't fly with people that want to enjoy the quiet, and I'm sympathetic to their concerns.

Not using generators during quite time means just that. No matter how quiet it is you are still braking the rules.

How do you beat the dreaded SB curfew hours? Yes he is special!

Please spend the money on extra batteries.... And I'll thank you for not running that "whisper quiet" generator that would wake me up.
Solar is silent. So is battery power.
