Yes, thats right. It 'burps'. It is like the pressure inside the holding tank is higher than outside. Push the pedal & a bubble of air comes up. We have been at a high elevation for the past few nights, over 6000', & one needs to stand back if the pedal is pushed quickly. We are at a lower altitude now & the 'burping' is not as bad.
Any ideas?

The first thing I would do is check the to make sure tank vent is not plugged up. The vent lets gasses escape and lets air in the tank when it is dumped. There should not be any pressure in the tank.

X2.
A blocked vent is probably the only thing that would allow pressure to build in the tank.

My holding tank is not a simple box or rectangle. It is, with the exception that the top section on one side extends out a ways so the top is a couple of feet wider than the main box. Like an L but turn that over. If parked off level a bit towards the part with the L it can block the vent tube that is installed there. It would have been better installed over the main tank portion but it is what it is.
So mine percolates sometimes and I know it is really getting full.

Betcha you got something comfortably nesting in the vent system. That ol'timer's trick may work - drop an ice cube down each roof vent and listen for the splash. No splash usually means blocked vent system. Unless, of course, you have one of those inverted "L" dealies, like Yuba City has. A call to mfr's tech line (if they're still there) might guide you.

So many responses in such a short time! Mike Rowe would love to hear from you all on this poopy subject.
Yeah, the vent crossed my mind. Wonder how it could get blocked. The trailer is relatively new & has the internal wash system so I doubt if the dreaded pile has formed. I always add at least a few gallons of water after dumping & prefer to dump after some travel time to slosh contents around. We never ask for FHU sites prefering to get at least a few days before dumping, a good practice I hear.
