Hi there! I'm asking this in fulltiming, because I think weekend or recreational use wouldn't be as much of an issue than it would for fulltiming.

Right now, I am only a fulltiming wannabe, and my husband and I are planning for about 12 years from now (age 55). I was just diagnosed with allergies in October, which are under control with allergy meds. The allergist recommends no carpet in the house, and we're looking to pull up the carpet in our house someday...

My question involves carpet vs. no carpet in an RV. We don't know what we'll get, since it's far off...but if this were today, we're leaning toward a Winnebago Sightseer. They have an all vinyl floor option. I thought with allergies, that might be preferable. Also, keeping the floor clean too.

Any other advantages or disadvantages? I thought I read somewhere something about sound?

Thanks for your thoughts!

What in carpet are you allergic to. Most of todays carpets are made of synthetic yarn. Most do not use jute as the secondary backing. The sheet vinyl flooring used by the MH manufactures is of cheap quality. I like bamboo flooring but I doubt if Winnebago uses it in their coaches. If you stay away from wool carpet and if the carpet mill uses synthetic backing and you vacuum at least once a week I can't see why you couldn't use carpet in at least in the bedroom.

bar_20, most likely it is not the carpet that the OP is allergic to, it is the dust and dust mites that are impossible to keep out of your carpet. I know that that is MY problem.

I have a TT with all vinyl floors, although that was not why we got that particular trailer. I've put down a couple throw rugs that we can easily take out and launder to help catch mud, dirt, etc. however.

Hi there, naturist is correct; sorry I wasn't clear! I was given a big list of instructions on things to help alleviate allergy symptoms, and one was to remove carpets because of dust and dust mites.

We installed Allure flooring and ripped out all of the carpet. We don't have allergies. It is amazing how much dust gets tracked into a rig. Being able to take a broom to the floors at will is very nice.

I also have allergies. I've found that having a Winnebago product with the basement air conditioner gives me the ability to use a whole-house filter with high filtration qualities. It beats our other RVs with the roof air and foam filters, and has helped a great deal in reducing my problems.

Like many others we got rid of the carpet. It's just not really suitable for a motor home in my opinion. We installed laminate flooring and it's much easier to clean and keep clean.
If you can get linoleum or laminate as a factory option I would go for it.

Thanks for the replies, eveyone! I thought all vinyl would be a very good option, it will help with allergies, and eliminate the struggle of having to keep carpet clean. When they happy, gleeful day comes for us to fulltime, we'll probably choose all vinyl.

MeanderMan, thanks for the tip on the AC in the basement...that's a great idea to add a filter to it, that will really help me out. Of course, this is a long way off, so it will all depend upon what is available in the RV industry at the time! With air quality being such a hot topic now, maybe in the future, those things will be standard...who knows!

All good info to add to my fulltime research information...thanks!

The amount of carpet in an RV is minuscule and wouldn't be hard to keep it relatively allergen-free with appropriate vacuuming or steam cleaning, which you'd have to do for any other fabric or upholstered surfaces anyway (valances, sofa, driver's seat, etc.).

Also, air flow through an RV is dramatically different from in a house, so you're breathing outside air in greater proportion than air that has potentially been contaminated by household components.

Finally: Many allergies are exacerbated by stress so you can expect an automatc improvement with more RVing!

12 years is a while away. It's hard to even imagine what may or may not be available by then.Who knows maybe even a cure for your alergies.
The main thing is to keep your dream of fulltiming alive.
