Hello,
My wife and I are going on Good Sams Caraventure to Alaska. Has anybody taken this Caraventure? If so, what do we need to look for? Also is anybody in RV.NET going on this Caraventure?

I wondered how they could show up at 9AM. Checked the intierary, they are coming from Skagway--were they spent 4 days. I'd much rather spend time in Skagway, then Whitehorse.

Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

Went on a caravan in 2006 with a diferent outfit, it was great, felt the safety with the group, also had a lot of good times with meeting and traveling with other RV,ers, made some lasting friendships, we had a leader, and a tail-gunner that would stay with anyone who broke down, did a break repair, replaced a wheel bearing on one TT, and helped with other small repairs he checked every rig each morning. The Co. also provided a med. em, in case any one needed a meda-vac to a hosp. I know some people like to go it alone, most times I do myself, but there is nothinf wrong with going with a group, have a great time.

PS I covered my radiator, and trans. cooler wirh hardware cloth, (heavy screen) took an extra spare for the TT. and carried radiator sealer, spare TT bearing set. When on comming truck came towards me I slowed moved to the right and flashed lights, gave him the right of way, otherwise they move to the right
of pavement into gravel, you get sprayed. Wish I was going with ya. Rob.

OOPS, it appears I was replying to a post about lack of services in campgrounds that was deleted before I got my post complete! That's what I get for lollygagging while writing!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Don't blame Good Sam for the lack of facilities at campgrounds in the north.
No water and no sewer is common in campgrounds that aren't in communities. Even when a campground is located within a community, it can be a challenge to provide those services so the services simply aren't provided.
Many of the campgrounds rely on their own generators to supply power to the camping area.
That is just the way it is.
If a traveller absolutely needs those services, then possibly a trip to Alaska isn't the best option for them, regardless of caravan company.
Caravans wouldn't work for us, but only because we don't like staying IN campgrounds. There are too many wonderful and scenic boondock spots lakeside and near rivers/creeks to be enjoyed.
I was not complaining about lack of services at a campground, I was complaining that Good Sam only supplies 30 amp service even if 50 amp is available.
Hope they don't delete this negative about Good Sam before people read it.
You can make a trip to Alaska nowadays and get 50 amp service most of the time.
50 amp power is available in Dawson Creek, Watson Lake, North Pole, Healy, Trapper Creek, Homer, Kenai, Seward, Valdez and many others.
Dawson Creek it was available at the receptacle at each site but we had to pay $7.50 extra.
North Pole we were the only caravan of 3 that was in the row that ONLY had 30 amp. 50 amp was only $2.75 extra. Tried to move but the other caravans filled the park.
Don't want to tell you the poor excuse for a campground we were at in Homer. Just poor 30 amp. NOTHING ELSE!
Seward, Valdez same thing 30 amp.
I just want potential caravaners to know that if they require 50 amp, don't go with Good Sam. This is not stated anywhere.
They are deleting my posts.
I agree - it should be stated up front that 30amp is booked and list which places are going to be 30amp only. It should also allow for a pre-booking of 50 amp spot where it is possible.
Your original post just wasn't clear enough in regards to this point. It was stated that your big issue was the lack of information, but your opening statements didn't really hit on that.
I understand why this would be a very frustrating trip - especially since it is mostly a pre-trip communication thing....
