We don't need hookups, but we would like to 1) make a reservation somewhere, and 2) have a firepit (that qualifies Tunnel Mtn).

In the pics I've seen of Tunnel Mtn. it looks more like an RV park than a campground...and what is the difference? I don't know. I guess an RV park has neat rows with not much privacy, and a campground has randomness and at least has some trees and/or rocks between you and your neighbors.

Thanks

Steve

The area of Tunnel Mountain that allows fires is quite nice. There is not much underbrush, so you can see from one site into another, but there is space between the sites.

We have stayed in both and prefer the area with campfires and no hook-ups. There are still shower blocks and restrooms in the area with no hook-ups.

Tunnel Mountain Campsites If you click on the link there is a photo of a sample site near the bottom. You have to pay extra for a fire permit.

When we stayed Tunnel Mtn mid September last year, they had a couple of loops open. Tenters were mostly using the loop close to the gate house. Since we were sleeping in our SUV they assigned a site in J or H where the ground is quite level. It was close to the potties so we had neighbors all around. I would describe it as busy but not particularly noisy.

We were close enough to one neighbor site to notice that they had the same Swedish alcohol stove. So we got to talking. They were a young Australian couple who'd bought a used minivan, and were spending 3mths touring western Canada and Alaska.

The busiest campground on that September trip was a provincial park near Vancouver (on a Thursday). That had a good number of families, with kids and adults talking well into the night. Elsewhere, our neighbors were pretty quite, mostly retired people in RVs, European tourists in rental RVs, and younger tourists traveling light.

We stayed at Tunnel Mt in '08 in the section where you park on the blacktop with W/E hook-ups(RV park)but no fire rings. Doesn't sound very good but oh, the view. Adjacent to that section was a wooded section in the trees. Much more privacy and woodsy (CG). I think those sites had full hook-ups. All Tunnel Mt. I think it is separated as Tunnel MT Trailer Village 1 and 2. Sorry, I can't remember which is which. You can't go wrong.

We stayed on one of these sites last summer. Banana sites as someone called them (I like that!). They were fine and we didn't miss not having a fire pit as we were always tired from long day of touring, etc.

Our experience at Tunnel Mountain was my daughter & I sitting at the table playing cribbage when we noticed movement outside in the dark. We thought we had peeping toms but when we checked we had 5 elk standing there watching us play cards. We still remember that even though it was 1989.

Two Jack Main is a nice spot about 3 miles out of town. No hookups and firepits are available. Its a large park with about 300 sites so it should be easy to get in

http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/visit9b.aspx#camp

according to this 5 of the 13 Banff campgrounds close early in September. Several more close during the month. No mention of bear closures. However at Lake Louise, tents (soft-side) are allowed only within the electric bear fence (except in winter).
