Please understand, I am interested in the 6.5 not the 6.2 or the 6.6.
Some people seem to think they are the same engine. They are definately not.
This particular engine is the 6.5 Turbo and the rear end is a 4.10 with the 6 speed Allison transmission. It is pushing a 20,000 pound motorhome. It is stock.
What I would like to know is, it's rated HP, and what can be done to improve it's power and also what kind of fuel mileage I can expect from it?
Any info you have from personal experience will be appreciated.

I have a 6.5 TD in a 96 Hummer H1 and it is very underpowered. If I try to tow much with it it can barely get out of its own way. I could not imagine it trying to haul any more wight. Go to a real diesel.

I see you already have the unit with the 6.5 I suggest the forum that was recomended as well. If you can get it well filterd cold fresh air and give it big short exshaust it will help. You can also put a manual wastegate on but watch your EGT. Good Luck. Eddy

I'm surprised it can push that in any direction except downhill and to the mechanic shop. I had one in a 3/4T Chev, 180HP, empty it could get about 23MPG Imp or about 19US, with a small travel trailer it dropped. Horrible electronics, 5 of the PMD computers had to be replaced, that's when I finally threw in the towel and got rid of it, now drive a reliable Cummins.

Since this is a RV forum I rather hoped I would find people who had this engine in a motor home instead of a pick up or hummer. Your pick ups and hummers are going to have a more high speed rear end than a motor home. There for they will have less power, but get better MPG.
MH's use a 4.10 to 1 reduction while pick ups use something in the area of 3.3 to 1 reduction.
In other words it's Apples and Oranges. You can't compare the two.
But thanks for the comeback.

The 6.2 and the 6.5 are from the same family. You will rue the day you buy one. The 6.2 will live longer due to its mechanical injection pump, I guess you could add a turbo. The 6.5 will leave you in the most horrible situations because of its unreliable fuel system. The MHs that had these engines were better served with the 460 Ford and 454 Chevy engines of their day. Just saying.....

That 6.5 is not that good of an engine to start.

Works OK in a van or pickup sized vehicle. Works OK,is not great like the Cummins 5.9.

In a larger application like a MH, I'd take a pass, will cause you more trouble than what its worth.

Don't know where you're getting your info from, those trucks used 3.73 and 4.10 rear ends with a special order 4.56 for bigger trucks.

I worked on these engines for about 10 years. I would never let anyone I know buy one. They had a bad injection pump design. The 6.5 that was used in the Hummer H1 was the old mechanical pump because of the poor reliabilty of the newer pump. I can't remember how many heads I had to replace. They crack heads a lot.
