Hi there everyone,

DW and I have been full timing in our fifth wheel for a little over a year now. We just returned from a trip this weekend, and now the water heater is making a funny 'Squeal' when ever we turn on a hot water tap at any point in the trailer. The sound is definitely coming from the water heater. When I throw the bypass valve, the sound goes away, but of course so does the hot water.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on with our Water heater?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

could be that bypass valve is plugged with minerals and the water passing through makes a squealing sound

May be air in the water heater or a bad relief valve shut the water heater off let it cool and open the relif valve slowly and let some water flow out close up the relief valve and hook up city water like you normally would then run some water through the faucets and turn the water heater back on when warm see if this occurs again if it does more than likely the relief valve is shot.Shutting the bypass on and off will allow more air in the system.

Have you seen a loss in flow as well? If so, my money is on the check valve at the hot water outlet partially closing.

I sure see a lot of discussion about these check valves. Seems there are frequent failures due to mineral buildup, brittle plastic parts, worn seats, etc. My TT does not have them. Instead, there are three water line valves. One on the cold inlet line, one on the hot outlet line, and one in the bypass line between the hot and cold lines prior to the other two valves. Seems like an inexpensive retrofit to eliminate a problem area. Why not just get rid of the check valve and use shutoff valves?

triple ditto on the check valve. At first I always think it's the DW singing in the shower, but when she tells me to quit singing in the shower (and I know I haven't), it's time to replace the checkvalve.

Yes, if the access was better, a valve could be used in lieu of the check valve but so far it hasn't been too much of a hassle just replacing the valve every time.

I need some help in locating this "check valve". Our five is 3 years old has recently starting the same noise when any hot water faucet is on. This weekend, I looked at the water heater and was not sure what I was looking for. I have a cold water inlet at the bottom side of the tank and a hot water outlet at the topside. I do have a bypass valve, but otherwise, mine sounds just like RVnRobin. Is the check valve the brass part at the top of the water heater - the hot water oultet? Thanks. Phillip

Yes, the check valve is the brass fitting screwed into the top port on the water heater.
