Hello,
We're just ending our stay in Texas for the winter and while we were here we were able to take advantage of a great special with Cricket for our telephone needs and we had free WiFi at our site. Now we are heading back home and (if it's anything like last year) we are in for a difficult time trying to find affordable cell phone deals in Quebec. If we use mobile internet, then we figure that we could use Skype for the phone and have internet at the same time. The only thing is that you are stuck with a contract and what do we do when we come back to Texas next winter? It seems very complicated and we are concerned about making these decisions being we got stuck with a bad deal last year that ended up costing a lot. Does anyone have a good idea of what we should do. Something affordable that won't cost an arm and a leg?

Remember you're Canadian and we love to get screwed by telephone companies.
There is talk of loosening up ownership rules of telecom companies in Canada but don't hold your breathe.

found these comments on another site. I have no experience with it. Some plans allow for a Vacation Hold option. Usually costs something to do that.

The new limits and costs are:
$10 for 10 days or 100MB (whichever comes first)
$20 for 30 days or 300MB (whichever comes first)
$40 for 30 days or 1GB (whichever comes first)
$60 for 30 days or 5GB (whichever comes first)
They use the Sprint network in the US, and Bell Canada in Canada, and have USB sticks such as the NovAtel U760."

Hi cslambert,
Virgin offers "broadband2go" in Canada on a month to month basis. I do not know if it blocks Skype.

You don't have to have a contract if you pay for the phone outright. If you already have a smartphone that you own and is unlocked, you can get a SIM card from somewhere like Rogers and just go on a month-by-month plan or get a pay-as-you go card.
I did that myself for when I travel in the US. I stopped in at an AT&T kiosk in the states and they gave me a SIM card for free. That way I don't have to pay outrageous roaming and data charges when I'm travelling.

Virgin Canada Broadband
We're using Virgin's Broadband2Go in the US. It doesn't block Skype here (voice call Skype cost is about 4 cents/min for data then add on Skype cost if any. It does struggle with video calls and, of course, per minute data costs are higher) don't know about Canada, although I very much doubt that the US service will work in Canada and vise versa (different software, service provider etc).
