My brother has his aircard up and running but the signal isn't very strong just a couple bars at best.
could he use a usb-male, usb-female cable and stick the air card up by a window?
has anyone done this I told him to buy a cradelpoint router and that would solve two problems
one the low signal he could move router to good location.
two I think the air-card sticking out of the side usb port on his toshiba is just waiting to become a problem.
Thanks
Pete

Using the extension will help! The Sprint Air-card I just got, came with one, as well as a little stand that holds the air-card, so that it can be mounted on the top of the laptop screen.
Getting a longer cable would do the same thing, and should work fine.

On a similar note, I am working on a tugboat right now, with an air-card that is attached to a router in the pilothouse, for the boat's computer. I ran a cable from the router down to my desktop, and am essentially doing what you are asking.....using an air-card from a remote area, via cable......and it works great!

You can get cables at Radio Shack....though I think I got mine at Walmart?

Also, it should be noted, if the signal in your area is weak to begin with, the extended cable won't help much anyway. You might want to try getting a booster antenna, but depending on the signal, that may be overkill. I'd try the cable first....it's only a few bucks.....if it doesn't work much better, then I'd see about talking with the guy at Radio Shack.

simple answer...

yup

i actually preferred using my sprint USB air card with an extension...less chance of bumping the aircard while plugged in the usb port and possibly breaking it(usb port) and in a vehicle, i could simply put it on the dash if i had weak signal...didnt help a LOT but did make a difference

Thanks for the reply.
When I first saw a tug-boat I was in the Navy stationed in philidelphia Naval ship yard I fell in love with them and wanted to work on one when I got out of the Navy. that was back in 1960 here it is 50 years later and the only tug-boats I have are fridge-magnets. I have had motorcycles, campers, sail boats, motor boats and 3 airplanes but never did make it on a real tug, just home made one in Lake erie one time.

Yes, you can use an extension. At our house, if we hook it to the laptop, we barely get one bar. I use a 10 foot plus a 6 foot cord to get it OUTSIDE the window and I get 3-4 bars.

Here is a picture of the Tug I work on. It's about 32 years old, but a great boat! We're "pinned" to a 100K barrel oil barge, working the East Coast. I've been doing this for about 33 years, and still enjoy it.

The boat is 116' long, 32' wide, with a draft of about 16'6". It is powered by a pair of EMD diesel engines (similar to what is in a locomotive) rated at 3900 HP. There are (3) John Deere 99Kw gensets, and the Intercon "Pin" system that we use to attach to the barge when pushing it (you can see the pin at the side, near the water line....they extend out to lock us in place in the "notch" of the barge) which makes us an "ATB" (Articulated Tug-Barge) unit.

Some people have jobs that they enjoy so much they don't look forward to retirement. That tugboat looks like one of those jobs. Its hard to grasp the horsepower available on that boat.....That would really make a 45' motorhome fly up a hill
