More often when it sits and 6,000 miles when it's traveling. Fortunately mine hardly ever sits for long

My dad had a garage so grew up in the auto business. Went to school and got an Engineering degree. IMHO, the mileages used by dealers are to get you in the shop. Nothing has changed with the manufactures' oil change mileage figures but oils, filters and engines have changed exponentially. Even back then you only changed the filter every other oil change and now it is every time. Everything we own including the Dodge Ram Cummings Diesel is changed at 15,000 miles with new filters. Never a problem with any manufacture's product in the NEW ERA of technology. It is in the best monetary interest of the Dealers, Stations, Shops & Oil Companies to shorten the interval. IMHO! Shoots, we have over 90,000 miles on our Toyhauler alone.

I change my oil every 5k miles. I also change the fuel filters at the same time. Maybe overkill, but I've never had any issues!

I own 3 diesels. 2 marine & the truck. The marine diesels, a Perkins & a Cummins 5.9L (same block as the Dodge Cummins) get changed every 100hours of use. I don't know how that would convert to a truck engine. The real difference is that a marine engine effectively spends its whole time working as if it was going UPHILL. Water resistance increases with speed. There are no gears. There is no cruise, no downhill time.
My truck has the Isuzu Duramax. Oil gets changed every 5000 miles. About 4500 of those miles will be done with the trailer behind it.
To me oil is a good mechanic repellant. Diesels like clean oil, clean air & clean fuel.

Correct... and mandated for severe service...which is likely where you will be if you do any towing.
And while you are thinking about service, I would suggest nothing but synthetic oil ...and would also suggest a cetane booster for your fuel...adds lubricity. Our 6 liter engines are somewhat problematic.

I have a ford 6.0 in my truck. ONLY use motorcraft filters!!! Other than that, I exclusively use Delvac 5w-40 oil, and run 15k oil changes, changing the filter at 7500(it's on top so you can do that, at least on the trucks). There's a TON of info at ford-trucks.com in the 6.0 portion. Sadly many are screaming about problems with 6.0's. I love mine, at 190k and running strong, and I drive it pretty hard.

Oil change myth.
http://www.moneybluebook.com/the-3000-mile-oil-change-myth-save-your-money/
There is a ton more documentation & data on the net supporting it is old thinking & a myth.
It's tough to get people to think outside the box or change their ways.

Interesting to note, that in the diesel vs gas debate, they always talk about longevity of diesel, but half the comments talk about milage or TIME. Assuming the time frame controls that translates to something like 5000 miles or less.
If you assume a diesel will go for 300,000 miles, 5000/year would theoreticaly last 60 years. A 150,000 mile gas engine will last a mere 30 years.
Yes, there are lots of people who put lots of miles on each year and for the really big loads it's hard to beat the diesel.
Back on topic, she's an old work horse so we give her the 3000 mile treatment.

I think we've been down this road several times before.
I stay with my normal response to this: I wait till I am in the 5% left range on my driver information display then I head for the closest GM dealer and give it up to them. Same for the trans filter and the fuel filter.
This system has worked for me ever since that 13 member crew of
GM engineers formulated what and when.
On a gasser they have several sensors they work with to determine the change on the diesel I am not sure but I go with their plan.

I have a Ford F250 with 6.0 diesel engine that is still under warranty and will follow instructions in the owners manual. I see no reason to vary from what the manufacturer reccomends.
