according to NADA, my 3 year-old 2007 Roo 23SS is worth more than i paid for it back in 2006. that's because NADA based its worth on what the MSRP was for it back in 2006.

what did you pay for your Roo in 2006?

we bought it new, in Nov., 2006, for $14,500 from House of Camping near Chicago. that was a 2007 Roo 23SS with almost every option, except storm windows, heated holding tanks and aluminum wheels.

the cheapest dealer of the 3 Roo dealers in NorCal was $19,000 for the same trailer.
cost us around $500 for the trip there and back.

Hey BC_Hybrid,

Where did you find your US Hybrid? Did you look for a long time? Any thoughts on RV Wholesale or RV Direct in the USA?

and how is your purchase going?

Cheers,

P.S. The 21E looks like a great floorplan with a nice mix of TT and Hybrid features. Good choice!

Hey Sweet Chariot,

We started looking seriously in Feb and found ours at the beginning of March. I'll finally be able to bring mine home within a week or 2. Don't be discouraged about importing because of my experience. Mine has only been delayed because the dealer is in the process of getting on themselves on title before they can release it to me. Mine are unusual circumstances, because they took the trailer on a trade in from a CDN just a couple days before I bought it.

It actually worked out OK for me this way. I ordered a solar kit from amsolar.com, shipped it to the dealer and had a local authorized installer put it on for me right on the lot.

Next thing for me to do is get a couple Trojan 6V batteries from WA and I'll be set.

It's not easy finding a Hybrid within driving distance of the Lower Mainland. I was going to go as far as Idaho or take a chance on a unit delivered from east of Texas - most are there. Have you tried Yakaz.com? You can search all of Craigslist and get a map view of where the ads are located geographically. These are all the "hybrid trailer" ads in the USA: http://www.yakaz.com/results.php?univ=all&v=map&from=form&f=&what=hybrid+trailer

Another thing - don't let anyone here tell you that you should not pay more than the NADA.com price of a trailer. The NADA prices are ridiculously low. They are what a dealer would give you for your trade in - NOT the true market value. This is especially true with Hybrids. I have tried using a NADA price as starting point for negotiation and it is a waste of time.

I'm in Langley btw. If I see something worth while, I'll shoot you a line. PM me anytime.

You have that exactly reversed. NADA prices are set high so dealers can give you a "good deal." They're based on MSRP which no one should have paid.

NADA Low Retail without adding "options" is all you should pay for a used camper. A dealer sure won't give you that much for your trailer unless you're not getting any discount on the top end from MSRP.

Typical discount from MSRP from high volume dealers is a full third, 33% off sticker price. For new trailers.

I think the Roo line is an exception to the rule. The 23SS is priced exceptionally high on NADA. I have looked at Jayco, Rvision and Kodiak's and my experience has been the opposite.

i agree with Chuck in theory. but as BC has experienced, on the West Coast you can throw NADA out the window.

RVs are much more expensive out here. only the few that are made here instead of the Midwest are reasonable.
used RVs sell for more than their NADA values, out here. doesn't matter if it's a dealer or private party.
they seem to know that they can ask for more because they know that the better prices are east of here but people won't drive that far to get them.
new RVs sell for near MSRP here. in the Midwest, new RVs are being sold for 33% off of MSRP, so used RVs are going to sell cheaper, too.

i was one of the few who didn't want to play the game, especially after a dealer dared me to drive to the Midwest to get those great prices. he said if i wanted prices like RVW or RVDirect, then drive to Ohio or Indiana to get them. otherwise, he'd sell me the trailer for $500 off of MSRP.
so i drove to Chicago and back and saved $3,500.

Amen. Also adding to the frustration is the rareness of Hybrids ANYWHERE. I've been to 2 RV shows here in BC over the last couple months and I've seen only seen ONE Hybrid (the same one at both shows!), a 17 ft Jayco -http://www.travelandrvcanada.com/rvsoft/DealerFiles/ListingView.asp?ListingID=1243

Across the USA, there are only 44 Craigslist ads for "Hybrid Travel Trailer": http://www.yakaz.com/results.php?univ=miscellaneous&v=map&from=form&f=&what=hybrid+travel+trailer

Slim pickings to say the least!!

So I consider myself very lucky to get my trailer for the NADA high price in WA.

BC, we were very frustrated after 2 years of searching. after seeing that we could get a brand new hybrid, in the Midwest, for the same price as a smaller, 5-year older hybrid out here, we decided to buy new.

for us it didn't make sense not to make a trip east and back. if we could get the exact hybrid/floorplan we wanted at a huge savings, instead of settling for a smaller/used hybrid, then it was worth a few days trip.
