Hey guys,

I am importing a 2006 Trail-Sport 21E Hybrid into Canada. The interesting thing is that the HTT was taken in on a trade in the USA from a CDN and now I am importing it back to Canada. I never clued in on the many signs that this thing was from Canada when I was looking at it: like English/French decals and the Big CSA approved sticker on it!

So, now the dealer is in the process of transferring the title to it's name and then they have to give me the remainder of the docs so I can transfer it into mine. They tell me that the process takes 4-6 weeks! argh. The good news that it is already CSA approved, so I don't have to pay for the RIV inspection. I am also questioning (now that I think about it) whether I have to pay the GST at the border as someone already has paid it originally...

I think it's all worth it as I believe I got an excellent deal on it. The sticker price was originally $12,999 and I got the price down to $7500 including the equalizers and brake control for the truck! Considering the prices of hybrids up here, this investment should have an excellent return.

So, I am anxiously waiting for the call to come and pick it up. Hopefully it will be sooner than later.

The trailer has a couple minor issues that I would like the dealer to take care of prior to pick up but he seems hesitant to do so for free...

#1 The button snaps on the pop out are damaged and need to be replaced. This is where the canvas buttons down to the bed. Has anyone ever replaced these? Maybe I should just take them off and replace them with velcro. If any other R-Vision owners could provide a picture of these snaps, it would be greatly appreciated.

#2.The awning will not lock into place unless its fully erected. There is apparently some damage to the lock. The dealer quoted me $100-$150 for repair. anyone have experience with this repair?

Thanks for reading!

do you have the right model number? the only 2006 Trail-Sport 21' that NADA shows is the 21RBH Expandable. the Trail-Cruiser line has the 21RBH Expandable and the 21DBL.

i'm guessing it's the 21RBH Expandable since you have the E on the end.
if it is, NADA's high value is $6,700US.

I have replace a couple of the snaps on my tent-ends. I found them at Wal-Mart, I think they were in the sewing section. They are real easy to replace as long as the canvas is not torn. I just had to pry the button off and then slipped the new button into place and then crimp it together. I also make a habit of putting vaseline onto the snaps it helps when un-snapping, they don't bind or get hung-up.
As far as the awning, not sure. I think my dealer charges around $95 an hour just for labor, so it doesn't seem that far out of whack.

Yes - it's the 21RBH Expandable. The NADA prices are way low. However, dealers aren't dumb and I'm sure that's what they valued it on a trade in and got it for practically nothing. If you could find one for less than $11k, I'd be very surprised. Up here,I could sell it tomorrow for $12k.

Used and New Hybrids are a rarity on the West Coast. very few dealers carry them and even fewer used ones are out there. so they fetch a high price.
NADA prices are based on MSRP. so IMHO, they are high because no one pays MSRP for their RV.
according to NADA, my 3 year-old 2007 Roo 23SS is worth more than i paid for it back in 2006. that's because NADA based its worth on what the MSRP was for it back in 2006.

the problem is out here, dealers and private parties can get NADA's high prices. so, we're forced pay the inflated prices or drive to the Midwest to get a better price.
people in other areas of the country can get hybrids at more realistic prices.

I have imported two trailers and one ATV so I can help you. Of course mine was to Ontario but I don't think that matters. I think you will have to pay GST and you will have to pay PST and defintely you will have to pay the 200$ importation fee. 4-6 weeks is completely unreasonable. It should take 4-6 days. Let me know if you need any more help.

I can tell you that RIV.ca is your friend. It will give you step by step instructions.

I hate to say this as a Canadian. But buying doesn't make sense at this time with the dollar being almost par. In the end I bought a 2006 23SS Roo for 10.5K used once. I am not kidding once. With exchange taxes, fuel, duties it cost 12K CDN even.

Hi Claude,

Thanks for your advice. I'll give RIV a call tomorrow. I've actually done this before with our Subaru and it was quick and painless. I think the delay here is that the WA dealership took it in on a trade from a CDN a day or 2 before I purchased it, so they have to get on title first. They tell me that's where the delay is. But, I'll see if RIV will tell me something different.
