We're heading south on US 395 in Oregon ,over mountain passes. The roads are clear of snow and the forecast is good but the ODT web page states that carrying chains in vehicles over 10,000 is a requirement. Do you carry chains? Has anyone ever been questioned? I can't find any exceptions for RVs so it looks like it pertains to us too.

Yes, I carry chains. Yes, I have been asked at check point to see if I had them.
Yes, you have to carry tire chains for your toad.
I would never put them on but I do carry them. October 1 to April 1

I believe April 15 is the cut off date here in Oregon. You might want to check the web site, if I had been quick enough I would have posted it,. But you can get it.
We normally use all weather on the TV and carry chains for the trailer, yes they are required when that sign goes up. Same as the big rigs , drag chains are meant to be used. California is getting that way and I think Idaho too.
As I said WHEN the sign goes up. If you are quick you can park for the weather to change, Then continue on. But do not get caught stuck with out all the needed apparatus. Oct-Apr.
Good travels and take care.

When are you traveling? A decent sized Winter storm is forecast for the area near the CA-OR border on down to South of the Tahoe area tomorrow. Should be a quick mover, but if you are caught in it you will need chains for sure. Roads should clear quickly behind this storm as temps are forecast to rise.

I would skip the chains if you can remain flexible to allow a couple days delay for the road to be clear after a storm. I carry chains in winter for my truck and trailer but my plans are rarely flexible and sometimes I specifically want to get up into the snow.

Yes, I carry chains. Never used them on my current vehicle, but in the past, I have been stopped and asked. If you don't have them, you sit until the weather prediction is clear or you buy some.
Some places, like Schwab will take back a set of chains and refund your money if they have not been used.

Thanks for the answers. We came over 5 or 6 passes today on US 395. The carry chain signs were up but we lucked out , a few flurries and no snow on the road. Hardly any traffic and no cops. We carried chains in our old RV after we scared ourselves coming down a dirt road on the snowy side of a mountain in Colorado but we never had to use them. I think we better get some for our new motorhome just in case.
