I saw Durango to Ouray and just assumed 550. MMMMMMMMMM guess I should have RTFQ. In that case I would guess anyone could haul whatever over that pass.

For what it's worth. I think the road over Lizard Head Pass is flat out gorgeous. I like 550 too and drive it without hesitation but credit where credit is due - just the view of Trout Lake alone is drop dead beautiful!

Have done both ways many times - use Lizard Head with an RV and Red Mountain without an RV.

We did this last year and the only bad stretch was Lizard Pass. We have a 35 ft 5vr, we were pulling with a Chev 2500HD with the 8.1 gasser. Our truck is about 8 years old, at some point we were worried we wouldn't get over the top, but we did it. My husband is an extreme novice to mountain driving and we did it, go for it. Much better than traveling thru Silverton.

I agree 100% with Lauren on this. I some times wonder if those that say 550 is no problem with an RV are the one I meet sharing MY lane on 550!

It is not me! I travel that route a lot in the summer w/RV and love it. I watch my speed, stay in my lane, control my rig, and stop to see the sights. A picnic lunch on Red Mountain is tops! It is one of the most beautiful areas of Colorado. Enjoy!

I am glad you do all those things; it is all the others that don't that bother me. On some of the turns many rigs NEED more than one lane.

I agree. The turn where the big falls are, I don't see how ANY RV can stay in their own lane. I traveled that road at least once a week (some times twice when we didn't go back through Delores.)when we worked in Durango....Loved the food at the Irish Pub in Ouray.
