Greetings All!
I have just moved out from my home into my 1993 Pace Arrow Motor Home, and had an interesting time with the DirecTV techs (about 22 yoa) yesterday and now would like advice from the all knowing group, lol!
I had planned on using a tripod and just run the wires over to the MH...however, the technicians told me the ONLY way they could hook up DirecTV was to have two flat wires hanging from the window over the couch in the living room (which would not allow the window to close all the way or lock) and one line hanging from the bedroom window.
The three cables would then be run EXPOSED to the recievers inside...by drilling through some cabinets and a bookcase. Some just lieing on the floor exposed.
I want to ask those that have DirecTV if this is somethign that they accepted or would accept?
Thanks for any help on this matter...I just wanted to watch TV and keep the integrity of the MH...

were you dealing with a direct tv employee or a contract guy?
anywhoo im a betting 99.8 percent of techs have never been in a RV much less tried to wire it... and most have minimal training anyway
anyway to answer your question, Sat/cable standards will not allow(the last i know) an installation in a RV....reason why? no permanent Earth ground
you can do anything you want in your RV however these installers have to follow NEC statands.... liability issues play a huge part in how these companies apply their installation standards
Im surprised the dude even sought a solution(other than they only get paid if the install goes in and gets a signed off WO)
just my 2 cents

He probably doesn't want to re-wire your cable outlet for satellite TV and not being an RV guy I don't blame him. You may need to either do this yourself or have an RV dealer run a satellite wire to where you want to use it and make sure it DOESN'T pass through your booster.

Quote: .I just wanted to watch TV and keep the integrity of the MH... Well, how did you expect to hook up your receivers? There is no magic involved. If your Pace does not have RG-6 coax already run under the coach and up the walls to the receiver locations, coax still needs to be run so you can get a signal to the receivers from the dish. You have to decide whether you're willing to live with what DTV recommended, or shell out for a more professional (and structurally intrusive) install.

well you can use one of those flat 6 inch long pieces of cable available from camping world and run it in a window and shut it. just have them install that way for one dual receiver and then do it over right by yourself.

Well. you open the window for them to install, and close it later...
The problem with motor homes is that they are not wired for a ground mount DirecTV antenna (normally) they may be wired for park cable but I very strongly recommend NOT using that cable.. So here is what I did..
I ran a pair (Since I need two LNB lines) of RG-6 cables to a connector which in my case is under the hood (Front engine gasser) on the brake bracket but I recommend any basement compartment that's handy or a bulkhead (through wall) connector. That is the SAT-TV IN port. And that's where it hooks up. That simple.
Now, a bit of a tv primer
DirecTV Rv accounts use one bird, (101 west)
DishNetwork uses two (110/119)
Dish HDTV uses 3, on the west half it's 110/119/and think 127 (or 129)
On the east I don't know what they use
DirecHDTV uses 3 birds, 101 in the KU band and two more on either side of it in the KA band
So if you opt for a rooftop antenna. If you get a dish http://www.motosat.com you get the dish that matches your service
If you use a DOME: DirecTV (NOT HD) is your best option.
(Dish may work but if you have a DVR or multi-receivers you may not be happy)
I may go back to Dish however
Direc is gouging just now.
Oh, one last advice.. WIth DirecTV find someone who can point you to the RV-Waiver (if you don't already have it) and fill it in and fax or mail it in, this gets you network TV no matter where you are.. Without that waiver you will loose your network TV if you are too far from home (CBS/NBC/ABC/FOX/UPN/CW/and PBS)
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

Hey Guys!
Thanks for the imput...I will try to piece them all together and come up with the best solution
Oh, btw...we tried the flat cable out the window (2nd paragraph) but the window would not shut all the way (the DirecTV tech slammed the window at least a dozen times trying to shut the window), and it would not shut all the way...and in no way would the large window over the couch LOCK.
Thanks again!

I would look for a nonenvasive manner to run the RG6 from the receiver locations to a basemrnt area and then out. Tell them that's where you want the outside connections.
May take a little inovation on your part but that's what we RV'ers are all about.

was that the 6 inch long piece of flat cable sold for this purpose? my sliders would close on it, my windows at home close on it. not talking about the thicker old fashioned TV antenna wire.

Bumpy...yup it was indeed a 6" long piece of flat wire that the Tech had in his truck ($16.00 each X 3) and after 12 slams of the window, he was able to shut it one time, but NOT with two in the one window!
Thanks again guys!
