While on my way home the other night my mind got to wandering as it sometime does,
and this thought showed up what happens if the air-card connection isn't disconnected when shuting down the computer?
would it still be powered by the laptops battery?
does the air-card keep "checking-in" and adding data usage to my account?
would it shut down?
would I have to re-connect when I turned on the computer or would it still be connected?
What about those who use a cradelpoint router, do they leave it on or off?
I would like to know so if anyone can help please do.

Call your air card provider. They should be able to answer your questions. Personally, I turn mine off when I'm away from my computer AND before I shut down at night.

Hi pete42,

Some laptops do power the usb ports even when turned off. I belive it is prudent to shut down and disconnect the usb moden.

I normally disconnect before shutting the PC down. If I forget, I get a warning message that I am about to be disconnected. Also, there is a flashing light on the modem that goes out when the computer is shut down. That tells me there is no power to the modem when the computer is shut down.

Mine stays plugged in whether the computer is on or off, 24/7.
You only receive data when you actually "connect" so there isn't any data being transfered either in or out when its just plugged in. You have to actually hit the "connect" button on the screen.

Ours only powers up when the computer is turned on. It has to reconnect each time even if it's kept plugged in. I usually disconnect before shutting down because the computer takes a long time to shut down if all of the programs are not closed first.

When I was chasing wild land fires across the western USA for a living, I had an air card for my laptop...

When through with my online activities, I always removed the air card from the laptop and stowed it safely away in it's little metal carrying case.. to protect it from damage..

With all the hustle and bustle of a fire camp and trying to live out of a duffel bag... it was to easy for the air card to be broken or stolen..

So... based on my personal experience only... I suggest removing the air card and stowing it away immediately after you are finished with your online activities, so it does not get knocked, dropped or broken..

But as always ... to each his own...

TWO CENTS WORTH
The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved.
The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference.

What happens if the air card connection is not disconnected when shutting down the comptuer.. NOTHING. it is disconnected when the computer is shut down. Always, Since without software (The driver program), which is running on the computer. the card can not chat with the tower.

Also depending on if it's a card or USB dongle, and the age of the computer the card will be without power when the computer is shut down (Newer computers may still provide USB power)

So.. It's shut down 100%

The danger. (Should you leave your computer on) is that a hacker might find it and breach your firewall.. You do have a fire wall right?
