Ya maybe a little grumpy!! But those comments by that poster are about as accurate as saying to always eat where the truckers stop. Some truckers do know good places but they also eat in some greasy spoons. We often will ask for a recommendation from locals. But not the janitor in a hotel or a velador. Ask a middle class person . You will often get some good advice for anything from a good hot dog cart to a 5 star bistro. We often eat where tourists do not.

Let me clarify the eating comment. When we went into a new town, we frequently noted that there were empty resturants and ones that were crowded with people. It was tempting to go to the empty ones, but we consistently had good eating experiences when sticking to the popular ones. I think the local population have good judgement and vote with their wallets.

I have to agree with Moisheh, If one is not careful, one may find oneself, eating with the lower classes. My brother in law is a janitor and he knows nothing about the finer things in life, what we knows.
One should never take advice from one's inferiors!

Orion:

My post was mot meant to be elitist. Poor people in Mexico cannot usually afford good food. I see people eating Tacos beside the bus depot in Oaxaca that not even the brave on this forum would eat. But they are only 3 pesos each. The janitor in the trailer park might be a fine fellow but with his 150 pesos a day( or less) I don't think he could recommend a good restaurant. Has nothing to do with eating with any class of people. I have eaten in cardboard houses with roosters running around on the dirt floor and enjoyed myself. As some on this forum will attest we have many Mexican friends who are very poor. I could care less about their " class". Your sarcasm is not appreciated and misplaced.

Well at least I am pleased that you recognise it as sarcasm. I would hate to think that you consider you have similar values to myself as unlike you I could not care less about 'class' and would NEVER ignore someone else's opinion simply based on his income level or social standing.

The number of Mexicans that are eating in the restaurant is one of the criteria that we use in choosing to eat in a place or not, whether in Mexico or in the small storefront Mexican restaurants in the states. The other criteria we use is my wifes nose, if she doesn't like the smells, we don't eat there! We use the nose method for other types of restaurents too.

Pulsar, good call! My response would have required deletion.

We never eat at restaurants with wheels.

In Mazatlan, we have witnessed the block ice vendors drop off their blocks of ice on the sidewalk and the merchants go to these drop-off points and drag the ice, down the street, to their venue. UGH!

No spitting on the sidewalk laws takes on a new meaning after seeing this.

"Never miss an opportunity---" to be sarcastic.
