We are heading from Sault Ste. Marie to Montreal in August as part of a bigger trip, just have a few days, and I have a couple specific questions. I would greatly appreciate any help. We have two sons, 12 and 10, who like scrambling on rocks and the like. We have been to Toronto before, so we plan to take 17 across to Montreal or else drop down to Killbear Provincial Park and then go over on 80.

1) Are there any must-see or must-do places between there? An amazing campground with boulders all around? A restaurant famous for hundreds of miles? An old-school theme park with unusual rides? Anything like that?

2) Is Killbear the ideal stop in the middle, or is there a better place? RVparkreviews seems to be lacking as far as Canadian campgrounds, with lots of provincial parks not even listed. We have a small trailer and prefer wooded campgrounds.

3) Is there a great campground just west of Montreal?

Thank you in advance for any help.

A good place to stop in Ottawa is Ottawa Campground. Also I would stop at this site in North Bay Train.

There's the Montreal West KOA just off highway 20 west of Montreal. Never been there so I don't know anything about it but I've passed it many times. Likely the normal KOA standard (which works in my book).

Sault Ste Marie to Massey (Chutes Provincial Park with 7 sets of waterfalls/rapids); Sudbury - Science Centre North good place to visit; Samuel De Chaplain Provincial Park east of North Bay; Driftwood Prov Park and then Fritroy Provincial Park before arriving in Ottawa. Voyageur Provincial Park just before crossing the border into Quebec. Check out Ontario Parks.
for a park specific details.

Fitzroy Provincial Park is a great park, as is Voyageur. I have only tented in both those parks, though, so you might want to check ahead, depending on the size of your RV.

We drove from the Soo to Ottawa last summer, after completing a lap that took us from Ottawa, to Assateague State Park in Maryland, across to Chicago, across Canada to Edmonton and into BC a tad, then down to Montana and across the US northern states and then to the Soo.

The absolute worst road was between roughly Mattawa, Ontario and about Pembroke/Renfrew. It was several hours of a mix of embarrassment as an Ontarian and jostling kidneys!

Chutes is a nice overnight provincial park. Nice walking paths, pretty falls, and you can swim in some light rapids there. Sammy D. Champlain is a pretty spot. Last time we were there we helped paddle a very large voyageur canoe. You can also tube down the river when the water is high enough. Kids love it (pix on my web site).

If you haven't visited Canada's capital city, we have some kind of interesting festival most weekends, and many world-class museums (war, nature, civilization, air, art, etc.). The Ottawa Municipal Campground is a nice place to call home base.

Thank you all for the advice. Especially helpful as the five-month window opens. For sure we are going with Chutes and likely Voyageur as well. Can't wait to visit. Greatly appreciate it.
