We just added the mifi 2200 this week. Been working really good once we dumped the landline connection. We got it at a Verizon store and took our laptop in and set it up for us. The plans for aircard or mifi 2200 is 40.00 for 250mb and 60.00 5GB. We did have to sign a 2 year contract that we really didn't want but will use it in our stick buildt at home also as we can't get anything but dialup, no more dialup for us.

OP here, turns out I have to go to the east coast on business Monday for a few days (the hotel wifi is $20 per day!), so I decided to just pick up a Mifi at the local Verizon store so I'd have it to take along. $49.99 after rebate, 5gb plan at $59.99 per month on a two-year contract. It's charging now.
The Verizon guy did offer the option of buying one without a contract, $269.99, and said that I could still get the 5gb plan. But, he said stopping service under that scenario, there'd be a $35 activation every time I wanted to restart service.
Then he mentioned something that I hadn't heard of before: he said that, with the contract, there's an option to suspend service once a year, for up to six months, for a fee of $15 (don't know if the contract gets lengthened by the amount of the suspension or not). He seemed to know what he was talking about, said the default suspension period is 90 days, so if I wanted to go the six months I'd have to call back on the 91st day to continue the suspension for another three months, otherwise it would restart automatically.
I haven't have time to check out if that's true or not, but if it is, this may be an ideal situation for my sort of use.

AFAIK.. yes.. contract time is extended by the amount of suspension time,
contract is 24 months of payments
Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother

That might be $15 a month for the vacation hold not a one time fee. Double check it.
Thunder: we did exactly the same thing except we had DSL at about 45 a month. 5GB a month is fine for a huge number of people.

After charging up the battery, it only took about five minutes to get up and running with the Mifi, I'm using it now, seems to work fine so far. Faster than my home DSL (which claims to be 1.5, but rarely is). Even so, I won't be dumping the home service, it's cheap and the DW needs a way to get online when I'm out of town with the Mifi.
Suspension idea sounds good, it doesn't bother me if it gets added to the end of the contract-- at least I won't be paying for it during lengthy periods when I won't use it!

The USB760 works great and it's important to have the external antenna port in some places, which the mi-fi doesn't have, as someone already mentioned. I, too, have a Cradlepoint router. My Mac guy gave me a usb extension that's about 10" long and I use that rather than inserting the usb modem directly into my laptop. That way, I don't have to worry about bumping it and breaking it off. Same if I'm using the router. I'm using Verizon wireless at home, too, and I live in a borderline area adjacent to a National Forest. Works a LOT better than Hughes.net satellite which is my only other option except for dial-up.
