I already have Verizon cell service and want to add a MiFi. I haven't been able to get the Verizon website to let me buy a MiFi as an existing customer-- when I click "Buy It", and log in, it takes me to my account page, but I can't find an option there that will let me add a Mifi, it only let's me add additional voice phones.
Using the Verizon site and buying the MiFi as a new customer, with a two-year contract, shows a price of $49.99.
Amazon is selling them to new customers, with a two year contract, for a penny.
Is there really any advantage to adding the MiFi as part of my existing cell phone account? Or should I just buy it from Amazon and sign up for a new account?

Call *611 from your Verizon phone and just order it that way. They will tack it onto your existing bill. FYI, I just had to send mine back due to lack of adequate signal strength where I live. I so wanted to dump my landline in favor of WIFI or MIFI but no luck with Verizon. Better luck to you!

I went to the Verizon store to get my Mifi. I did it that way because they give you 30 days to return it if you are not happy and doing that at the store just seemed easier. I did end up taking it back. It worked great but I could tell there would be issues with it in weak signal areas. I decided to exchange it for a USB 760 because it has an extrnal antenna port. I also ordered a Cradlepoint router so my wife and I could be online at the same time.

if you want it for a discount price whether (1) penny or $50, its a NEW (2) year contract for that DEVICE the MIFI
you can buy from ebay or other RETAIL seller , then call customer service pay the $35 activation fee and get a month to month account for the MIFI
the discount price is subsidized by the (2) yr contract
Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother

The discount price isn't really a factor, I'd be happy to just buy one retail and go month-to-month. However, while I don't expect to use the MiFi much, when I do, there will be large amounts of data involved, so I definitely want the 5gb plan. Reports I've read online say that the $50 month-to-month plan only covers 500mb-- and that the only way to get the 5gb plan is to sign up for the two-year contract. If that's true, month-to-month won't work for me.
I guess a call to *611 is in order to clarify my options.
I'm fairly confident that the MiFi will meet my needs in the areas I want to use it, because my "unofficially" tethered Droid works fine in those areas. But, I have a client that uses web conferences extensively, and they want me to be able to attend them while we're on the road this summer. I'm afraid that kind of bandwidth use might raise red flags if I do it on the Droid, so I thought I'd get the MiFi to avoid any issues.

I did what wtmtnhiker did but by accident. I went to the Verizon store and requested a MiFi. Instead, I was sold a USB 760. So I 'dumped' our broadband and now use the 760 at home and on the highway. I already had a Wilson cellphone antenna mounted on top of the coach along with their 3 watt amplifier. Now I can use them with an adapter that hooks into the side of the 760 in the coach. As far as an antenna for the house, I now have a roofmount Yagi that gives me very adequate speed. Without the home Yagi, my home speed is dismal--slow as dial-up.

Not according to the Verizon page at the link below. In addition to the 5gb and 250mb monthly plans we're familiar with, it shows prepaid plans by day, week, or month, "best if you want the flexibility of using Mobile Broadband without a long-term commitment."
The monthly prepaid plan is $50, for 500mb.

The Verizon page (see link in my post above) indicates that a $40 plan is also available for, "USB Modems, PC Cards, ExpressCards, MiFi™ 2200, Notebooks or Netbooks."
