I had a neighbor that left for several days and the lights were left on so I went over and unscrewed the two light bulbs.

Just close your eyes and go to sleep. My porch light has been on for 13 yrs. Don't want to turn it off I might forget to turn it on for the pizza delivery guy and I sure don't want him to not find the place.

Why do people feel they need to have it dark all night?

As others posted, just ask them about the lights... they probably simply forgot they were on.
I have asked a few campers to turn on their "scare" lights when I've needed light at the hookups, or to check something on that side of my camper.

We moved to a new house (in the country) a year ago from town. In town there were lights everywhere and from all directions. We tried to pick campgrounds, or at least campsites, away from lights where it IS dark. A campfire at night is just not the same when a security light is glowing over it. Many time's we've been camping under security lights, and I absolutely hated it! Part of the camping experience is the dark night, being able to see the moon and the stars, kids playing hide-and-seek in the dark, flashlight tag, and catching fire-flies!
Now, where we're living now! IT'S DARK! And it's AMAZING every night. I love the outside. It's AMAZING seeing the stars. Seeing the glow along the horizon of the neighboring towns 5 to 10 miles away. Seeing the moon reflect off the snow at night and the nighttime is almost as bright as day! We have a fire-ring and have fires outside almost every night in the summer! The colors in the flame are amazing! The dark makes all this absolutely AWESOME! And in town, we never saw any of this.
So, yes, some of us like the dark at night because we never get to experience it at home.
For what it's worth, we love our new home so much, and we have such nice privacy, and still have open fields all around us, it's almost an unwelcome thought about going back to a campground with another RVs 30 feet on each side of us, cars going up and down the road, and kids running through our campsite! And a "resort" with security lights behind a locked gate! Oh my, gives a whole new meaning to "camping"! I am thankful for where I live now!
For what it's worth, the previous owner of our house had motion sensor lights put on the garage and a dusk-to dawn light between the garage and the house, and lights all over the outside of the house. I keep them ALL turned off!
And oh! We have a swimming pool! Do you have any idea how absolutely awesome it is to have a swimming party in the DARK under a full moon!

I've forgotten our yellow porch light on the odd time however I would not continue to stay in a campground that was lit a football field all night.
