From what I understand, the VuQube is the best idea for those who don't want to monkey around with wrenches, compasses and manual dish pointing. Year after year I have seen folks with satellite dishes on tripods and it would take them sometimes hours to get a good signal.

I have recently (about 2 years or so) seen many more people using the VuQube. I have found several different models and none of them require a compass or a wrench. The entry level V10 requires that you tell the receiver what zipcode you're in and then using the remote, you point the dish. The VuQube V20 points itself when you tell it to and the V30 points while your vehicle is in motion. For most folks the V20 is perfect. Sit it down and a minute or so later you're watching your favorite TV shows at camp. Checkout the VuQube Portable Satellite Here.

Hope this helps.

I imagine this has been covered before, but I'm looking for a small dish compatible with my home DirecTV receiver. My understanding is the receiver will work if I have a dish, meter, and cable. Am I right? Anyhow, where to buy, best price, which one ?? Need all the info I can get. Thanks

I happened to catch a Direct TV installer in my area and asked him about this same subject. He asked to verify I was a Direct TV customer and then put together a dish for me from used parts. Didn't cost me a thing. This is why I like Direct TV...they really focus on customer satisfaction.

I was given a dish from Dish Network installer, built a stand, used it for several trips... some were very frustrating, so I bought a VuQube 1000 that my 11 yo daughter aligns by herself (after I connect) and sold my free dish on Craigslist for $30.

Our old dish worked great and once aligned wasn't an issue, but whenever we were traveling and stopped overnight someplace I wouldn't even bother with it. Now it is so easy a caveman... er ah, my little girl can do it.

So....was it a hassle with alignment each time or just setting it up?

Take a look at this PVC dish mount. Easy to make and store, won't blow over and stays where it is aimed.

This is what I made, the three leg version. Replace all the dish mount fasteners with nylon wingnuts so you don't need tools to point it and glue on plastic bubble level. The nylon won't rust up and become hard to turn. I found them at Lowe's. I ended up drilling a small weep hole in the bottom of the metal dish so it wouldn't hold water. After you get it pointed right you will see what I'm talking about.

All you need to set it up is a compass. Practice at home where you can see your other dish but remember everything is upside down. Point the dish with the compass, and if you don't get the signal, tip the dish from side to side then adjust the angle. After you get it to work, mark the settings as your "home". If you don't stray much from the area these settings will work. Just set it on the ground and level it up.

You don't really need the big cable. The standard small cable will work. Buy 100' and some extra connectors to split it into three sections and use only what you need for the best signal strength. Use those push on quick connectors and everything goes pretty fast.

Good luck. My 8 yr. old grandson can point this thing it's so easy.

If you're interesting more info BEFORE buying your portable satellite dish read this ones.

But did you try call to the DirecTV support team? I hope they'll recommend you a lot of good stuff.
