I ALWAYS test my breakaway switch prior to starting on a trip and each day that I am towing the TT. It is on my checklist just before plugging in my TT-to-TV power cable. Just one of the things I do for peace of mind.

Great topic. I have never checked mine. One of those things that are easily taken for granted, kinda like the air pressure in the spare.

According to the Prodigy manual, it can fry the Prodigy, as you said.
According to the Valley Industries Odyssey manual, it will not fry the controller.
It depends on the controller. Some have built in protection and some do not.
Just like some controllers work when mounted vertically and some do not. When purchasing a brake controller, make sure it has the features that are important to you.

When I first started towing I had a quick connector to make it easy to hook up the cable without pulling the pin. After some time I decided to check the brakes and the pin had become frozen in the receptacle. It finally fell apart as I got aggressive with it.
Ever since I now pull the pin every hitchup and feed it thru the other ends loop and plug it back in. Never had a problem again

During my state required yearly inspection, the inspection center told me that a proper emergency brake test does require that you disconnect the electrical hook up on the TT from the TV. Leaving the 7 way plug attached to the TV (during a disconnect test) will greatly upset the brake controller, possibly burning the circuits. The state requires a yearly inspection on the brakes, electrical and propane system. It's also a good time to cleck your exterior for any seal / seam problems.
