I jacked up the axles this last weekend to check the brakes and pump some grease in the axles for the up coming road trip. Just to see how it worked I decided to pull the breakaway cable to make sure the system worked. Well to my surprise it didn't!

I traced the issue to a broken connection in the connection box. Easy fix, but it had not occured to me that checking it should be on one of my pre-trip checklists.

I've got a 2200+ mile trip starting next week and I am sure glad I checked this out.

My TT is basicly brand new so the issue had to have occured at the factory?

Anyway is this something you guys check on each trip? I always check brakes, but hadn't checked breakway in the past.

Once in two years by accidentally pulling the cable while unhitching.

I haven't ever tested mine, not a bad idea after seeing your post. I do remember seeing something in my Prodigy installation guide about not pulling the break away cable when the trailer is plugged into the truck. Something about it may fry the Prodigy.

I've never tested mine either. Question....so if you don't jack a tire off the ground when testing, how do you know the brakes have been activated by the break away? Is it just a matter of pulling the break away and then trying to move the TT with the TV? I mean, that's what I would do. What do you guys do?

since the emergency brake system locks up the brakes, wouldn't that fry the magnets and deplete the battery if you tested it too long?

My friend pulled mine yesterday after towing with the Brake Buddy for many years. It did not work, have not found the problem yet.

Why couldn't you pull it just before you move out, then try to move the trailer? Obviously, not the time when you want to find a problem like that, but as a general means of checking it. What could it hurt? I assume it applies full power to the brake coils just like standing on the manual lever?

State law here in Montana requires that the breakaway system hold the brakes applied for 15 minutes (I think the statute is in MCA 61 something, you can find it with a little searching).
I don't test mine EVERY time I hook up, but frequently. Just pull the pin, and try to move the trailer (WITHOUT the umbilical connected to the truck), then put the pin back.
then remember to connect the umbilical before driving off!

Once a year when the trailer gets its annual inspection.

I'll have to look into that disconnecting the cable first - I don't remember them doing that....

And - can you really fry the magnets by leaving them on too long?
