I am close to buying a new mh.
1st dumb question
Is Itasca the exact same as Winnebago?
Is it real hard for a Canadian to buy a 250k mh in the USA...so far I only see better prices in the States but no real down side yet.
Can anyone educate me here? Thanks much in advance for your time.

Basically the same except for decals and some interior fabrics. The Itasca might have a thing or two as standard as opposed to optional.

Winnebago is the manufacture of the Itasca. Example: Winnebago Sightseer and Itasca Sunova.... Sunova is upgrade on Sightseer, but both Winnebago products.
The Canadians here in our park are buying new motorhomes.. mostly at Lazy Days.. no downside that I have heard of. I am sure someone will have better info on that for you. I used to own a Winnebago product, so that is where I got my education on that one..

First of all what you should do is go to this website, "www.riv.ca/home.aspx" and find out if you can bring that unit you like into Canada. The year is more important then the mileage. But at the site you will find out all the hoops you have to jump thru in order to bring it in legally.

Thanks to all responses so far. It seems buying in USA makes sense in my case. I did talk to a dealer in Florida that mentioned that about 10% of his buisness is selling to Canadians.
No idea why Canuk dealers are not more competitive? In my case Woody's in Alberta mentioned that my best offer on their 2010 Tour 42AD did not cover their cost, inspiring me to get quotes from a few USA dealers. So far all USA quotes are lower than my best offer including costs to fly to USA,lodging, fuel/food etc to return home.

Figure Canada taxes on the US purchase into your decision making too. I have many friends in Canada and they come to the states to buy cars, trucks and rv's. They tell me they save many thousands of dollars, even after paying the Canadian tax. Someone here will point you in the right direction for import.
Nice. Go on a warm vacation and drive home in a new motorhome. Have fun shopping!

We bought a new one and brought it back to Alberta. If you read all the info about exporting to Canada it will break down to a few important things you have to do.
You will have to have a bill of sale and fax all the info required three days before you plan to cross the border. Then you will pay GST at the border and a RIV fee for registering a Register Import Vehicle and will have to bring it to Canadian Tire for the inspection and sticker.
That's basicly it but make sure you have all your ducks in row before.Read the rules.
Go save a bunch of money!!

Ya...thanks for the encouragement....any tips on best way to get 250k to a dealer in USA if deal acceptable?
Can I use my visa to pay the GST/RIV at border? USA seems to start asking questions if I bring more than 10k across border it seems.

Canadian dealers seem to not realize that their competition is continent-wide, but some of that they get from Canadian car dealers, who have managed to get many of the automakers, particularly the orientals, to threaten their US dealers with franchise removal if they sell new cars to Canadians for immediate export. Honda, for example, goes so far as to deny warranty if a US bought car is registered in Canada.
Also, some dealers have locked in stock and seen the currency rates change against them, not understanding that their losses are not going to be passed on to their customers. I just don't care if they were dumb enough to restock when it was C$1=US$.85
The only issues you have are whether the vehicle is listed with RIV as admissible (has to do with lower US safety standards, or else failure to submit the paperwork by US manufacturers, it varies), whether or not the manufacturer is still in business to provide required recall clearance letters, and after that it's just paperwork and costs. You will pay a RIV fee to have Crappy Tire inspect your motorhome($75???), HST, GST,PST, as applicable, and RMV registration fees in your home province. Don't forget to see if you are licensed to drive the rig in your province (for example, air brake endorsement? or GRVW maximums?), arrange insurance from home, and check with the states you will drive through to see what they need for temporary registration (for example, Mass doesn't recognize temporary registration and the insurance on the temporarily registered vehicle, and seizes the vehicle and puts the driver in jail awaiting a hearing......Solution, drive around!)As well, when you cross US CUSTOMS will need your registration documents 72 hours prior to your crossing to check for stolen vehicles, liens, etc.... some crossings require real paper, some accept faxes.
Those are the critical points, but like all quasi-police processes, it's their way or the doorway, so check it out and don't try to be cute.........not a good time to argue, or to smuggle anything, for example 
You will save a bucket of money on a 250,000 rig. I figure it's worthwhile on a $10,000 car, so I'm guessing you could save $100,000, though at that point maybe some Canadian dealer would get seriously flexible and make you a deal so that you'd only save 20,000 or so.....
