To get from Dallas to Joplin, MO, I can take I-35 from Dallas to I-44 at Oklahoma City and I-44 to Joplin.
However, the Google map angles off of I-35 at Dallas onto U.S. 75 and merges into U.S. 69 to reach I-44 at a point east of Tulsa, OK. Is this a good shortcut or are the roads too narrow, hilly, curvy, in disrepair, and in general not a good choice?
Would it be better to take I-35 and I-44?

I have tried every route I could find in last few years going from st louis to FT worth area 69s is the most direct most of the time its two lanes and a few towns you may have to stop due to lights Two words of caution watch the speeds they drop quick in some areas and cops are aggressive in the small towns Also, gas stations can far between. I always stop at Loves Easy drive imho

I have taken the Hwy 69 route many times over the past 29 years. It is a good way to go. No big city traffic and 4 lane all the way. As was mentioned before, watch the small towns. No problem finding fuel along the way. Loves and Flying J are both along the way.

75/69 is a good way to go. There used to be a really rough long stretch around Lake Eufaula. But almost all that has been redone and is now smooth. Just a few miles left just before you reach I-40, but that much is tolerable.

US69 is quicker but..you'll run into some very rough pavement around Lake Eufaula in Oklahoma. One way to bypass it(although longer by a few miles)is to take the Indian Nation Tpke off of US69 just before you reach McAllister. Then I40 back over to US69, and north.
I prefer going all the way to Ft.Smith(on I40)and take I540 north to I44. This bypasses all the little towns and stoplights along US69 north of Muskogee.

Here's a blow by blow description from a trip up 75/69 made today, 3/10/10.
The road is in pretty good shape, certainly no worse than many sections of our sad interstate system. Worst spots were Denison, TX, where we practically became airborn due to some frost heaves. There are also some rougher sections near Eufala, BUT they have lane closures and are doing some repairs. We counted 7 stoplights from Durant, OK to I-40. There's one in Durant, three in Atoka and three in McAlester. No stoplights in TX. Based on the fact that the truckers were rigidly adhering to the posted speed limit, we knew that the whole route is one big speed trap. We must have seen half a dozen tickets given out over a 150 mile stretch.

For the best scenery, US 259 through Eastern Oklahmoa. Be prepaired for the curvey roads, the small mountains and great views. I love it, although one downhill run could try your brakes if don't downshift your vehicle.
Once at Ft Smith the road to Joplin is a cakewalk.
