I tried the standard covers with my Fantastic fan and was not happy with the result, so I got the covers intended for fan vents. MUCH BETTER. The vent will contact the cover and stop because of the load on the motor. Same as when you close them.

per FanTastics site it appears to be your own personal preference, I would tend to lean towards the cover offering the most CFM's to get the most out of what the fan was designed for.

Q. DO YOU RECOMMEND VENT COVERS?
A. Vent covers restrict the airflow of your Fan-Tastic Vent by about sixty percent. In addition, covering your vent requires more frequent cleaning due to dust and dirt accumulation. Although we do not recommend any cover over your Fan-Tastic Vent, it will not void your warranty.

Here is what MaxAir said about the FanMate/FanTastic Fans......

Fan/Mate™ is specifically designed for use with Fan-Tastic™ Ceiling Fan/Vents and other popular fan-powered roof vents. Allows your fan/vent to open for ventilation and provides excellent rain protection for your RV interior.

Congratulations on your discovery. They have been that way for years. Leave the cover down when you install them.
