I have Windows XP.
When I want to save anything I create a folder and save it to My Documents. If I want to retrieve it to E-mail for example it says it's a "read only" file and I can't use it. I've gone to "properties" and clicked out the read only button then hit apply but no change is made. It even asks me if I want to change all the contents of the file but it doesn't change anything. How can I change my files out of a read only? FWIW, I know enough about computers to get into trouble but not enough to get out... .. Thanks
Jerry.

Hi,
One way would be to cut and paste the document.
Mark the text using ctrl A
copy the text using ctrl C
Open a blank document
paste the text using ctrl v
save the document to what ever file name you wish to use.
I'm sure there are other ways to accomplish this too.

when you save a file , you save it if you can set the opion to text file under file type or Rich Text. then it will open up correctly.

See if changing the properties of the My Documents folder works.

what are you saving ?
web pages ? web pages saved as an emailable file, will be saved as MHTL a complete single file with all HTML coding and all graphic images, kinda like a PDF file (encapsulated) but different formatting, it can be opened in IE or FF, to email it you compose your email then attach the mhtl file, the file can be opened in the recevers browser
if you want the text of a web page you are better off just doing a copy and paste, save it in notepad or wordpad as a txt doc so you can use it later

Jerry,
Are you saying that every file in your entire My Documents folder and all of it's subfolders are marked Read Only?

How do you open them and edit them and save them in word if they are read only?
Do you by chance still have the document open in word when you try to email it? If so, you have to close the document first.

If Unchecking Read-Only from the folder in Properties doesn't do anything, its because Windows "typically" ignores changes to this attribute. The Read-Only attribute is used by Explorer to classify certain types of Windows folders such as those in My Documents. The only way to change this attribute is by using the "Attrib" command. Instead, try changing the Read-Only attribute(uncheck) of the individual files themselves, not the folder.
