We pulled into a Louisiana S.P. - without reservations (unnecessary) and were charged $3.00 for non-reservation. We were told this went to Reserve America. Why should they get a fee when they had nothing to do with our decision to stay at this S.P. - the park did all the necessary paperwork.

We are from Canada and don't have a lot of experience with state parks. Do all state parks charge a drive up fee? I don't remember paying a fee in Texas when we stayed in one of their S.P. a few years ago but I do think N.Y. State Parks added a similar fee.

I don't mind paying when someone does the work, but in the case of drive ups, why should an additional fee be added to support Reserve America? I must say, the Louisiana S.P. fees are extremely reasonable but I would rather them get the money than Reserve America.

It was more than likely negotiated into their contract to get a lower contract price from them.

Just wondering what the total price you ended up paying....better than the $35-$50 at a KOA or Jellystone Park?

It's an epidemic of thievery disguised as administrative fees. activation fees, re-activation fees, transfer fees, set-up fees, etc., and on and on and on.

The person who figures out how to successfully combat such machinations will be the country's next millionaire.

The state of Mississippi contracted w/Reserve America recently and I sure do like it so far. Reserve America is in complete charge of reservations now.

Think for a moment, when you rented your campsite in the SP then this info had to be entered into RA's computer reservation system, taking the site just rented out of available sites.

Unlike state parks Reserve America is a for profit business and I guess the $3.00 charge is what they must charge to handle entering your transaction into their system and remain profitable.

Reserve America is just another form of "monopolistic competition". Not a big fan. Few good experiences and avoid them like the plague.

The State is the one to blame for this, not RA. They are just a business providing a service that the State can use or not

States don't know how to run campgrounds. Never have.
Just last week, here in Michigan, we drove down to Sterling State Park to check out the campgrounds. It's right on Lake Erie and looked nice.

When we got home I went on the Internet to check out available sites on different days. Every full hook-up site was taken for the WHOLE season. I thought this very strange so I contact the DNR reservation system and explained the situation. Here's their reply:

"Thank you for contacting the Michigan State Park Reservation Center.
We are not able to check availability through web correspondence. Please contact the reservation center, toll-free at 1-800-447-2757. Our operators are available 8AM-8PM, Monday through Friday and 9AM-5PM, Saturday and Sunday. We will be able to assist you at that time.
Thank you."

No reference as to when they expect to have the system running if ever!!!
When people complain about "Government" I always explain that it's NOT government it's PEOPLE in government who don't care.......
