Fuel-cell technology arrives for RVs

As with the auto industry, energy usage is a key concern in RVs and one huge surprise was the presentation of a hydrogen fuel cell power generator called EFOY. Manufactured by a German company called SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, and made available to North Americans by Jayco, it's roughly the size of a breadbox, and provides a constant flow of electricity to the RV's batteries. Running on methanol, a cheap liquid fuel made from discarded wood chips, it produces power silently and greenly.

Whats you opinion?

Wood Alcohol (Methanol) is available almost everwhere in the U.S. The price varies depending on the brand and the store selling it.

the largest puts out 1.6 KW per day (24hours),So it takes 24 hours to output what an EU2000i outputs in apx one hour. But no pricing listed

"600 to 2160 watt hours per day"

The big unit puts out 90 watts continuous.

Been around for 4-5 years, but way too expensive for private use. If they have finally reached a price that people can pay this would certainly be a great option for RV storage. Maybe even boondocking for people with low power requirements.

a replacement for Solar ? , a constant charge 24/7 no matter what the weather, would work with a large enough bank of batteries, to supply needs/surges and absorb charge 24/7

Hi,

I believe the price for the 50 watt unit is about 3k. I could do solar panels that would do the same total wattage per day (1200 watts) for under 1k, and never have a fuel issue.

Now, if the Bloom scalable technology fuel cell catches on--we might end up with fuel cell powered electric hub motor RV's, and have more power available when standing still than ten houses would use!

This device only uses fuel cartridges sold by them. No where does it say you can refill them!
