quote=PackerBacker ...
My thoughts exactly when I was reading this. At least you folks in the US get 10 years, our passports are only good for 5 years here in Canada......................
Hmmmm, maybe the life expectancy in Canada is lower??

They are nothing new. 300 hundred years ago, they were only issued to a ship's captain, to cover his crew and passengers. Shortly after that period, anyone who could afford one could get them. Not many could afford them. Today, it is all about the value of the dollar. One fill up of my Allegro cost more than a passport! Today everyone carries Fifty and Hundreds in their wallet, which are accepted at convience stores. It was not that long ago when they would not take a fifty.

Not to high a price, but to say it is for increased security is a farce, the chip is anything but secure. Readers can be had easily and at a low cost. Some of the readers are portable and can operate from as far as 30 feet, read it in your pocket if it not totally shielded. Take it out of shield and anyone can read.

Well I can sort of understand a first time fee being high. I assume they spend some time to check your birth certificate, although how they know that a particular certificate goes with the person mailing in the application, I do not know. They also must laminate on the picture, although the new security laminate makes the picture unrecognizable. Then there is the expense of thinking up all the designs and mottos and clap trap that is on the new passports. So ok, charge me for that time and effort expended by the government empolyees. BUT...
The renewal fee makes no sense to me. Basically all they are doing is re-laminating your picture to a piece of paper. They have already got your old passport and are only -supposedly- looking at the picture to see if you are you. I doubt if even that much effort is expended, since my picture from 10 years ago looks nothing like me today. Oh well, life expectance for US males means I only have one more passport to buy.

I am not a expert in electronics but i do have a background in it and I find this hard to believe. If it were true, there would be a a lot of people in big doo doo because now even car keys and credit cards have chips. All someone whould have to do is scan your wallet and get your CC info. I for one would like to see an example or proof of one of these readers.

Remember, if you're only going to be doing road travel, just get a Passport Card...only $45 plus the cost of the pics.

Another good example of the cost of living not going up. Social security raise who needs it anyway.

we use to use card readers where I worked they would read through my wallet without removing it but they still need the wallet to touch the reader not read it while I walked by.
