Has any one seen or heard about AZ closing some if not all of their rest stops?

Yes, they're closing 13 rest areas due to the economy.
They will look at the situation in June, the end of the fiscal year.

They did an Injustice on I40 between Flagstaff and the California line, The two they have, one west of Flagstaff and one west of Kingman have both been closed.
I'm sure there were many other ways to reduce expenses but they made the decision for us. For those who travel this portion of highway it sure made it quite a distance without any rest areas.

Ultimately, elected officials (to put it kindly) can reopen rest areas if there are enough votes in it for them. Just eliminating vandalism will save money with closure. Too bad.

We found out the hard way last fall. Left Las Vegas heading home planning to stop for lunch at the rest area west of Flagstaff, CLOSED. Decided to go to the one on the east side of Flagstaff, also CLOSED. We ended up having a very late lunch in the parking lot of the Flying J in Winslow.
Sure would have been nice if Arizona had put up some warning signs in advance. A lot of travelers count on these rest areas. But then, warning signs cost money also!!!!
